As to how I found it, I was just curious as to how many people in the Raleigh area were now involved in selling heirloom tomato plants (lots, it turns out! It took many years, but I now have healthy competition - which is just fine!). The WANTED post caught my attention - so finding it was serendipity! Noting the date was a relief, since this past weekend was very slow (in fact, we are done going to market now) - so I think we've caught it in time. Anyone purchasing the dwarfs knows that they are still works in progress and the whole aim was trying them out and getting feedback to me.

The only plants I have going of final selections are ones that I am growing myself for evaluation and seed.

I suspect that there is all sorts of stuff going on out there that we are not aware of - the electronic world is huge, and each of us only dabble into the surface of it! Probably best that way....

So I think everything is fine - it was just quite a shock when I ran into that post late last night, really tired and a bit brain addled due to a really busy weekend!

Thanks to everyone for your views and insights - it is appreciated!
Craig, it wouldn't be GW. I read/post in the tomato forum at GW and stop by every day and have seen nothing I can remember about folks there even mentioning the Dwarf Project. Maybe, but I doubt it.

And the reason they're looking for plants, I'm sure, is b'c it's too late to start seeds in AZ right now. Yes, they could buy seeds for what they want, at least the of the 9 ones out there, but that would set them back a year and I say good on that.

At this point do you have intention of contacting them and letting them know what you think about thei request? Better you than anyone else b'c I know you well enough to know that you'd actually be polite while if it were me calling I'm not so sure I could be as polite as you would.

So they'd have to know about your website and as I see it that could come from anywhere that the Dwarfs have been discussed and that could well be at any number of message sites which I won't list here, but also including Tville.

Maybe best to just ignore them? I don't know right now what I would do but I think maybe I would let them know my opinion of their ruse to get plants and bypassing you entirely as well as telling them that they can actually buy seeds for the ones already out there.

On the positive side at least the Dwarf project is attracting the attention of quite a few folks.

Yup! Yes, Carolyn, I did contact them by email and told them about the fact that they would not be getting the released, stable varieties - we shall see....but at this point I think I've done enough, and will just let it pass from this point on. (prefer not to call - I am all about peace and tranquility right now, and don't want to or need to "get into it!")

I think it's very odd also - as others have said, why not just contact you and ask you to ship the plants? Certainly would seem easier and cheaper. So I completely don't get it.

But as far as doing something wrong, or illegal, or not allowed on Craigslist - this is what I'm missing - what rule/law have they broken? They seem pretty open about who they are, and are asking someone to do a service for a fee. Why can't they? I'm sure I'm having a "blonde" moment here...

I do understand why you don't like it of course, I think it's wierd and a bit creepy too.
They violated the terms of service when they gave out personal information about another person without their consent.

Ahhh, I see. Well that certainly would be a violation then. Thank you for explaining it to me, I've never used Craigslist.

They probably think dwarf plants in containers is a good idea
for Arizona (caliche; with containers, you do not have to dig
through it; with dwarfs, supporting the tomato plant is not much
of an issue). They probably plan to grow them out and make them a specialty of the business.

They could get seeds from Victory, Sandhill, and TGS and grow
a fall crop. It is southern Arizona, after all. But they were looking
for a shortcut (having Craig start them).

It is too early in the life of the business to tell whether they
will turn out to be someone you want to do business with or
shady operators.

I think it's unscrupulous to post such a thing on Craigslist.

Rest assured I'm going to be digging deep into this to get some answers. There's two things I have plenty of and I'm going to maximize usage of both.

Link to Craigslist now leads to: "This post deleted by it's author."

I didn't read the post when it was up. Perhaps they didn't mean any harm, and just wanted the plants since it's too late to plant seeds? Although I agree the idea of asking someone else to buy them and send them, rather just contacting Craig makes it look like they knew they were doing something Craig wouldn't approve of.

Craigslist attracts alot of shady people I've learned. When I was looking for a car a month and a half ago, there were quite a few ads where people were selling nice cars very cheap. I made the mistake of contacting one of them, but realized soon after it was con. Supposedly they had won "one free transport" of a car, and they were going to have the car sent here for me to look at, and I wouldn't have to pay for it until I looked at it. Interesting. Never heard of anything like that before. They claimed to be in Montana. Don't know what the catch was as I didn't respond. That's only the second time I've looked on that site for anything, the other being looking to see what jobs were listed. Many cons there also.

I've run into quite a few craigslist scams (potential - we didn't fall for any of them) when we've sold items. My daughter - and various friends - have identified quite a few scams when looking for jobs. Many things on there seem too good to be true - because they are!

The key in all of this - I was not contacted as the first step. That sealed the deal for me. All's well that ends well. I am in communication with the person who made the post.

Here is the craigslist ad they have been running in tucson for the last couple of months. I advertised on craigslist very sucessfully when I was selling my plants this year. It looks like they are just trying to advertise and sell their plants. I don't know. I may try to contact them and tall to them about their varieties.

I don't know where you see the striped tomato but if you link to their website from the Tucson one and then go to the bottom where it says other tomatoes, yes, they were/are selling plants for BTD.
