Yep, this is still a novelty here, despite the fact that the local farmers markets do offer black and striped tomatoes (bland tasting for some reason, not sure why - they do not reveal which variety they sell, which is sad).

Interesting that it's the heart-shaped tomatoes that the locals have never seen before.

When I was selling the leftover plants, people were asking me for 'roma' tomatoes, and I did not have them, so I was offering them the hearts instead. I hope they will be liked (if they get to maturity this year).

Craig, that was exactly the way I felt. I did try my best showing the plant labels, so she could write it down... not sure what happened. I am glad the varieties at the beginning of the article were spelled correctly!

Thank you Nader!

Our electric fence has been keeping the deer away since 2005.

Wonderful article and photos, Tania- I really enjoyed them- thanks for sharing.

I've never saved lettuce seed and had no idea how large the plants get before going to seed!

How nice it must be to have been noticed locally for all of your efforts! I bought some seeds from you this year, and some are going to be my winter indoor tomato project. There are just too many tomatoes and too little time....

Well... one thing leads to another. CBC News radio is going to have a 5 min interview (live) with me on Wednesday somewhere around 6:15 am Pacific time.

The topic of the discussion will be around a generational gap in gardening.

I am quite nervous, as I never did that before, it is a bit scary! I am hoping I am not going to be too sleepy and forgetting all the English words - it is too early for me to be coherent, I think.

Tania it is so cool that the CBC is doing an interview. You will be fine. A few years ago my hubby did an interview related to his work they went out of their way to make sure he was comfortable and relaxed. By the time they finished he forgot he was nervous to start.

HOW could I have missed this thread? There was another one up about a newspaper article somewhere here and I'd read that one.

All to say congratulations Tania.

I've given lots of interviews for different papers like the Boston Globe, the Sacramento Bee and others I can't remember now, and years ago they'd send you a copy of what they wrote for you to correct, but no more.

When I asked about the new policy I was told that the persons above the person doing the interview expect the interviewer to be the expert and that all that's reported will be factual.

HA HA HA!!!!

And I've also done a few live PBS programs out of MN, but in a local station hookup, usually call in questions, and that's fun and in one of them local there was a call in from a person I hadn't seen or had communication with since 1968.

Tania, your love for your gardening will come through and you'll have no problem remembering your English, that I know.

As for me I talked for a living so interviews and the like were never a problem.

I'm just so glad you're getting the attention you deserve.

And at least they spelled your name right, says Carolyn who has had her last spelled in, ahem, different ways as interpreted from the spoken word on the phone.

And then there was a time when a TV crew was at the old farm where I grew most of my tomatoes and someone nearby was using a chain saw and I was told to get over there and tell them to stop ASAP b/c it was interferring with the sound mikes.

Ah, the memories.

Tania,

Congrats on getting asked to do an interview for the CBC. That's the big time in Canada, since they'll pick it up coast to coast. (Plus they archive every interview for use at later dates. My BIL designed the computer programming for all of their stations to be able to draw up archives from all their locations....pretty cool.)

No worries...I'm sure you'll be fabulous! Afterall you know you're stuff...and if you're nervous, make up some cheat notes to set in front of you. They won't be able to see them. LOL (I worked in PR for 15 years, so am no stranger to giving interviews on radio and tv, as well as for print media...and I used the cheat sheets allot when being interviewed. An old PR veteran gave me that tip.)
