I am almost positive that there was a JD that owned some wholesale nurseries in the North Houston Area in the Early to Mid 1980's and he may have been the source of the JD C-Tex Tomatoes. He and I were in Kiwanis at slightly different times. I remember seeing them for sale in the mid 1990's at SW Fertilizer and Covington's. If any one knows Bill Adams, retired County Extention Agent, he may know.

Oh...I get it now. You played Jody on Family Affair! How'd you like working with Mr. French?

Dust devil just showed his age. Family Affair was 40+ years ago. Brian Keith turned out to be an excellent actor. He played in several movies that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Looks like maybe I've been wrong all these years.

JD’s Special C-Tex Collards –an old family heirloom variety from North Carolina, the Brann family has grown and maintained seed for these great tasting dark green leafed collards for several generations. JD Brann introduced these to Texas some years ago. Water well, and pick leaves while young and small-ribbed.

JD’s Special C-Tex Early Black Tomato –another family variety, this dark, deep red tomato, so dark it is almost black, was developed and promoted by JD Brann many years ago and is exclusive to Conroe Greenhouses, Inc. His son, Paul Brann, still grows this tomato in his garden and collects the seeds for our production. It is very sweet and an early producer. Fertilize monthly for best yield. Matures in 50 - 60 days. Indeterminate.
Not sure about that 50-60 days.

Feldon:

Thanks for getting to the source. I may have been the one that originated the erroneous Whittaker portion of the history. I knew I had seen the tomato in the '90's and I mistakenly associated an acquaintance with its distribution. Plus memories can get confused as one ages. Thanks again.

If I'm reading this correctly, JD's Special C-Tex originated with JD Brann who owned Conroe Greenhouses. Along the way, it somehow morphed into JD Whitaker - maybe someone mistakenly believed JD Whitaker (1990 HS graduate and active member of the Internet gardening community) was responsible for it.

Whatever the story, it's a great tomato. Hopefully Tania will see this thread and update it's attribution.

Great find, Feldon!

Hey, who are ya callin old? I'm going to be 37 next month and I loved old reruns of family affair (my dad was an engineer) and I really loved hardcastle and McCormick.... I miss the 80s, bad perms and all, it was a time when my "Fran Drescher" voice was actually acceptable, and not something to be laughed at as it is today - i.e. comments like "is that really your regular voice?"

Folks are missing the main story here. There are JD’s Special C-Tex COLLARDS! Now, that's big news.

thank you for making me laugh today. If you could only hear me say "get with the program" in my fran drescher like voice, it would be the epitome of Northerner impatience. hehehe
