sounds like you should maybe give fall/winter/spring a try at growing maters. I was an up north grower and having to learn a whole new growing skill, fall winter spring. This will be my first try at growing them during this time frame, so I'll see how it goes.

I'm going to try b54reds method (growing tomatoes all year long).......... My neptunes (determinates) are coming to an end...... I've had an awesome year with them...... but, after getting the recommendation from B54red last year on the spudakees ......... the neptunes taste does not even come close to the spuds...... so, I've used the neptunes for soups and sauces....... I'm now trying to set indian stripe and spuds out....... I'm hoping for the best......... I still have plenty of new tomatoes on my spuds......... B54red have you ever had the spuds that you planted in the spring last till the end of the season in the fall?

that is some impressive group of tomatoes. I sure wish I had just a handful of those. I'm so mater deprived it isn't funny. Oh it has been way too long since having a homegrown mater out of my garden. But there is hope, maybe in several months from now I will start having some as well.

I had a Spudakee plant that I put out last year on April 17 and it last until the third freeze of winter. It also produced a ton of fruit. Usually I don't get any plants to live that long because of my fusarium problems.
Those plants could probably benefit from a good dose of fertilizer at this point in the season. Try to keep them from developing too many stems and forks or you will end up with a mess as the plants continues to get larger. I have new Spudakee seedlings just potted up in the greenhouse for setting out in July and August. I only have one plant still alive in the garden and it is over 8 ft tall but has no foliage on the bottom 6 feet of the plant because of Gray Mold and caterpillars; but it is still setting a few fruits. |

The past two summer season down here, I started them like when I lived up north to only find no way am I going to get tomatoes during this time frame. Other on here from FL said that we grow during the fall/winter/spring time frame, so this fall will be my first attempt at growing me some maters. I'm planning to start seed late July. I've applied for the dwarf project as I have very limited space to grow and will be growing in grow bags. I was just wondering if you ever tried a different season to grow. Do you ever get cold or any frosts?

We had a big rain here last night so I went out this morning and set out around 20 seedlings for fall. I set out about 15 a little over 2 weeks ago. These are the varieties I set out: Big Beef, Tarasenko-6, Marianna's Peace, Limbaugh's Legacy, Terhune, Lescana, Zogola, Carbon, Cowlick's Brandywine, 1884, Dr. Wyches Yellow, Fish Lake Oxheart, Black Krim, Spudakee, Goliath, Indian Stripe, JD's Special C Tex, Dana's Dusky Rose and Cherokee Purple. I have a few plants left for replacements and more coming on in the greenhouse. I hope most of what I have already planted can survive the next month so I don't need the replacements but experience tells me many will not make it. In normal years the last good week to set out is the first week of August and after that it is rare for the plants to have time to make but not impossible. Down here you never know if winter will arrive in October or all the way til January.
