If you can put up some type of cage that is a foot or so out from the plant to support them it will help. I build a small fence around mine to keep them up. They tend to fall out in every direction unless supported. You will get more fruit from them if the limbs are kept off the ground. I was picking Pappadews last year right up til the third hard freeze so you may still have a good crop coming. They get a very deep pretty red when the weather cools down a bit. Good luck with them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interna...ties_of_Plants I do like that the law itself carves out an exception for personal subsistence use.

I started mine indoors in February, and they are about 3' tall with a decent amount of peppers, but the plants are not as big as the ones in the photos. None are red yet and they were slower to set fruit than any of my hot peppers.
I just love to eat them plain right out of the container when I buy them at the deli, yum!

Save the bottle Lakelady, I have 6 plants huge and full of fruit. it is easy to cut them open and clean seed and membranes out. And then drop them into the bottlers, and i will try to make some vinegar for another bottle.

I grew a Peppadew in ground a few years ago.
I had started the seed for this plant in Jan and barely got any fruit before frost in Oct/Nov. So, I dug this beauty up and put it in a pot for the winter - in my basement. The next spring, I brought it outside and it took off. I left it in the pot - a huge one that I can't lift - and over wintered it a second time. This year, I failed to water it during our heat and I think it's dead, but I will do it over again - start another. But, as others have said - VERY SLOW. |

I recently received seeds and am planning to grow them next year. From what I've read here, I guess they will need to be started very early!
In trolling for possible pickling recipes, I came across a blog on South African cooking that has one for Peppadews. It's about halfway down the list of topics. If anyone who is growing them this year tries it, I'd really love to hear how they were. http://www.cooksister.com/cooksister-qa.html#peppadews |

I think this is the same recipe as the one that has been posted here and is on Tomatoaddict's site. I used it two yrs ago and will do so again this yr. We thought it was very tasty and makes a beautiful jar of peppers.
