I thought that I'd let everyone know that I finally identified the caterpillar that was hollowing
out my tomato stems. The name is Papaipema nebris, Common Stalk Borer. It seems that these guys attack brome grass, corn, giant ragweed, and sometimes tomatoes and potatoes. There's some ragweed in the field next to my garden, so I guess that's where the infestation originated.

Here is a link that might be useful: Stalk Borer

Wonder if this is what is eating yours?

I'd done some more googling, and guessed at stalk borer. Wierd that I can't find it in there though. It is the same plant with the new excavation. Wierd though, they say it comes from weeds, and the plant is in a rubbermaid tub. So I don't even know how it crawled up to get in there. Haven't looked at things this morning though, but I suspect I did so much surgery I probably killed the plant. Why is it always a variety that you really want to try?

Tracy,
I wonder if it was up in the foliage on the same plant, and then came back down and bored itself a new hole, since you kicked it out of the original one.

Got him!

lol apparently I scared the poop out of him in relocating him, because my first photos don't have the... um... stuff.

Anyone know who he is?

Holy smokes!

The fun things we find in our gardens! Glad you got 'em. Now a quick prayer for your ailing plant!

Ugly one.
Details? Was he in the new hole, or elsewhere on the plant?

Get medieval! Mount his body on a stick as a warning to the others....

He was in the part of the stem that I had split.

lol I'm flushing him or something - who knows, maybe he'd be like a worm where the body in two parts would grow more of them!

I thought he was kinda cool and interesting to photograph - now that he's not in my tomato plant! I've gotten a few cool bug pictures lately - off topic, but isn't this little guy adorable? He hitchhiked on my skirt into the house, wasn't anywhere near the tomatoes thank goodness.
