I forgot that Porkchop was a Wild Boar Farms Variety. I planted that for the first time in 2012 and loved it although it produced late for me and I didn't get a lot of tomatoes. It is included on my 2013 list.

Great info folks! Thanks for the responses!

I have to go with Brad's Black Heart as the best tasting of his that
I have grown. I did not know Micheal Pollan was a WBF variety, but if so, I would have to say that was the worst. Beauty Queen was sweet and tasty, too.

Brad's Black Heart was fairly productive for me, in a tough year - hot here and draught.

I have had excellent luck with BTD Pink. It is one of the best fall tomatoes because it will ripen fairly good despite the cool weather and it has good disease tolerance except for Gray Mold which seems to hit all the black tomatoes harder than other colors. I really wanted to grow Brads Black Heart but unlike BTDP it is very susceptible to fusarium so I never got one to survive long enough to get any fruit off of them.

I've only grown one half of the varieties offered by WBF. On a scale of 1 /10, I give all of them an 11 for beauty, but 2 or 3 for taste. I can't define my reason for not being impressed with the different tastes, but I wasn't. I may have extended my expectations beyond reality watching them grow and thinking anything that beautiful has to posses exceptional taste.

Brad has a lot of good ones - Porkchop is my favorite for flavor. "Brad's Black Heart" is also excellent, but not a heavy producer for me.

For flavor Brad's Black Heart was the best Wild Boar Farms for me, but not very productive unfortunately. I'll grow it again though. Berkley Pink Tie Dye was delicious and I enjoyed them tremendously, very productive for me too. Didn't care for Pink Boar, but Black and Brown Boar were very interesting and complex and made great dried tomatoes!

After careful thought and reading opinions here I think will grow BBH and maybe 1-2 more of my listed WBF varieties and go from there. I dont want to put all my eggs in one basket so to speak.
Ted you make a great a point about looks versus flavor/taste. I'm really after flavor and taste. Looks I really dont care much about. I consider them a bonus. As a side note I also look forward to trying some of Fred Hempel's/ Artisan Seed striped varieties aswell. Thanks for all the input again! Damon |

Of your list, I have grown Sweet Carneros Pink, Trenton's Tiger, Michael Pollan, Red Boar and Brads Black Heart. I always include Brads Black Heart in my line up. I grew Sweet Carneros Pink this year and love it. The color was very pretty, the taste sweet with good balanced flavor, and production great. Trentons Tiger was productive and so pretty, but the taste of a typical plum tomato, not so good for fresh eating. I really wanted to like Michael Pollan, again a striking color, and I have long wanted a good yellow pear. This one didn't do it for me. Flavor wasn't up there. I also feel the same about Red Boar. Didn't make the list this year.

sprtsguy76 I have given up with other plants i tried, not sweet at all i want flavor also. New Cherry plants have been terrible for me, i tried a lot and only Sungold and Black Cherries i will grow now for flavor. I grow Brads which ones i know about also, its funny that the beautiful ones are my best flavor. So do look at some different ones, I have tried most black tomatos, and have my favorites. There are too many red fruits to try for me? I also hate green and yellow fruits also never have grown any which was sweet. |
