Crnkovic Yugoslavian will be in the garden again this year (wife approved; my opinion doesn't matter, even though I liked it, as well)...I am trying Barlow Jap and Magnum for the first time this year...we'll see how they do...

Any comments on Dr. Lyle? I found and old seed pack of this variety in my seed stash. I don't recall ever tasting it.

Crnkovic Yugoslavian
This is one of the cold treated seedlings, very nice loading on the lower trusses. No proof it helped, but still. |

Red Barn gets at least 3 or 4 spots in my garden every year and more if there is room. It is an excellent very large red beefsteak that will continue to produce right through the worst of the summer heat. It does have a bit of a tendency to get EB more than most but it is well worth the little bit of extra fungicide you may need to use. The plant gets huge and has thick stalks and foliage. Despite the huge fruit sometimes developed on them they need no extra support. It has been my best tasting red so far this summer and my best producing of the large fruited reds.
Couilles de Taureau is also another very big red beefsteak with great flavor. It can also produce massive fruits that are well supported by strong stems. Last year it and Dester were my best tasting reds followed closely by Red Barn. CDT also has the ability to set fruit and make large tomatoes in the hottest weather which is a real plus down here. It is a steady producer but sometimes starts slow with only one or two flowers on the first cluster which is usually fairly high up on the plant for a first cluster. Crnkovic Yugoslavian is one that I am not a big fan of. I was disappointed in the size of the fruits and found it rather bland. It was also disease prone here which didn't help. Hege German Pink is a good average size tomato with good flavor and quite productive but nothing to write home about. I have on in the garden for the first time in three years as a fall tomato and will see how it does. The others I have not tried. Bill |
