VGary (Gary Millwood) has Passed Away - Page 2

Gary was good friend and seed preservationist that will be greatly missed. I first met Him around 2002 at a weekend get together for the Appalachian Heirloom Seed Conservancy. Since then we have met at least once a year and he has shared numerous varieties of vegetables seed with me. Gary would bring his seeds to the AHSC meetings and give them to growers like the late Merlin Niedens. And later to myself. His goal was to make sure that the seed he collected would be available for others to grow by making them available through heirloom seed companies. There are numerous varieties of tomatoes that are commercially available thanks to Gary, Lenny and Gracies yellow, Granny Cantrell, and Pike co. to name a few. I could expect a phone call or an email telling me he was sending me some seed to grow. I will miss those surprise packages of seed. I have a corn growing, Hickory Cane, that Gary gave me in Oct. He asked that I grow it out and make it available to others before the variety dies out. I am thankful to have met Gary and I am thankful that he had faith in me to keep his seeds growing. Rodger

I'm stunned to hear of this terrible news about our dear friend Gary Millwood.

He was of great help to me here over the years with his advice, and not just about gardening either. Gary was always the first to reach out whenever a thread derailed and turned into a trainwreck. His words of wisdom taught me not to be as thin-skinned and quick tempered over matters that, in the grand scheme of things, really aren't a big deal. He is one of the few members here that sought out how to reach me my phone and I especially enjoyed the conversations we had.

Gary was the epitome of what I believe to be the perfect example of a true southern gentleman. He touched many people's lives in a positive way, including mine. To say he will be missed here is a huge understatement.

Rest in peace, Gary. You left the world a much better place than you found it.

Thanks Mischka. That certainly is a type of corn I may be interested in growing in the future. I can't now because I am growing out a rare sweet corn for Tom Wagner. So I don't have room to isolate two fields. But if my project works out, I would certainly be interested in growing it.

In my opinion the best way to honor Gary is by continuing his passion for the future. That is one I may be very interested in continuing sometime in the next several years.

I never met Gary in person, but we've communicated and exchanged many seeds. I will miss him dearly, he was such a wonderful person, kind and caring.

We'll grow his tomatoes in his honor.

oh how sad. i never met gary but i know we traded seeds and pm's several years ago. he was always such a kind and gentle man. i really liked gary based upon the limited contact i had with him. another tomatovillian who'll be missed.

Barb, I may have one to name after him - something that did not grow true to type from the seeds that Gary sent me, but turned out a wonderful tomato.

Gary Millwood will be missed. When I first got the heirloom bug, Gary was the most generous of all the seed traders I knew. Every pack of seeds that he sent had that "Kentucky Grown" label/seal of his. I wondered how many of those labels he used over the years.

I also have seed from him that might not be true (Cabin PL). I'm still trying to find out if Cabin is a RL, as it is listed in the "yearbook". If the real Cabin is a RL, this PL tomato will be named after him.

Our community is diminished with the loss of this wonderful man. We sent seeds back and forth several times. He loved his heirloom veggies and his Kentucky. May he rest peacefully in the arms of God. One day we'll all get to meet him.

My heart and prayers go out to his family in this most difficult time.

When I first joined Tomatoville, I introduced myself in the Town Hall, and Gary sent me a personal message to welcome a fellow Kentuckian. We talked a bit about tomatoes, and I wish I took the opportunity to meet him at one of our local 15 Thousand farmers meetings.

It was a gesture I really appreciated.

Like many, many others, Gary was very generous with seeds he sent to me over the years. Talking on the phone a couple of times it was evident Gary was a super individual. What a nice man he was.
