So, that read to me like you're going to transplant them as they sprout.

They will likely wilt and wither in less than a day under that scenario.

Well (almost) is relative like a little bit.
Sorry for the misunderstanding and thank you for your help.

Normally they would be in and out of the house for 2 months I dont have the luxury of the convenience this time.

My plant hardening off area is perfect.
It gets about 3 hours of direct sun then filtered sunlight or shade.
Been putting them there for years.

Took about 72 hours for me. I had mine under the lamps, but no heat mat. The lamps heat the soil up enough to skip the heat mat.

Just pee on them. It reactivates their electrolytes. They will sprout almost immediately.

I would wait a full 24 hours before throwing them all out and starting over!
Just add more heat to the next batch.

How are your seeds doing now? About 90% of mine have germinated.

I worry about that for this year. Good year for a late freeze. I will only start 14 plants, will no spares. Hope it warms up good by 3rd week of May. Winter storm after storm and I'm so tired.

maybe i'm doing it "wrong", but I try to put out out 6-8 plants averaging maybe 3" tall by jan 1st each year in my containers on my south wall w/trellises that will become shade. I use the WALL O WATER things. so I get tomaters for awhile till it heats too much and shade that grows clear to the top of my roof. right now the plants are maybe 6" over the top of the "walls". gonna have to remove the "walls" pretty soon. the plants all look great. have been doing it this way for years. in the garden, I put out the transplants a little later in cages with clear heavy duty plastic (the kind painters put on the floor) around the bottom of the cages, maybe 24" from the ground up. again, the plants look great. a coupla weeks ago, when the frost/sleet hit that worth is talking about, I covered up the cages with old tarps for 3 days/nights till the dam weather got back to normal. what I am doing works for ME, so far. but I am open to any other suggestions. my frustrations are getting the seeds to sprout then grow after nov/dec.

I hear ya this is horrible, If I would have started seeds in late December like i normally do I would be hosed right now.
I would be hauling trees in and out of the garage.

Why work that hard? Leave a tomato on the ground, let it sit there all winter. In the spring? New tomato plants grow there! Gobs of them.
