Last year when I heard that TT had a very limited supply of BZ, I had already ordered from them but they hadn't shipped yet. I called them by phone and they added BZ to my mailed order. If you haven't received your order yet, give'm a call. Their phone number is in the catalog and online.

Minnie Zacharia signed an excluive contract with Totally Tomatoes when it was still held by the other guy before he sold all his companies except one to Jung's.

I'm not sure who is producing the F1 hybrid now, as in whether TT is or they subcontract out.

There were problems in the past and for several years the TT hed by the other guy was not selling F1 seed and yet some folks loved it as well and praised the size and taste, not knowing they weren't growing true Big Zac. They even said in the catalog to cull this and that which one shouldn't have to do with a hybrid. Minnie appeared at GW and said that they didn't have the right parents. And again I don't know if the OLD TT did the hybridizing, which I doubt, or subcontracted out, which I assume.

So the current vendor is Totally Tomatoes as owned by Jung's and I have no idea who is doing the F1 seed production.

Bluelytes- go on then- PM me your mailing address and I will just about scrape up enough of (Michael's Monster portuguese) to send you, as I have very limited stock of them left-bar a few I put aside for myself to sow in february, but I can share them with you

Next year of course-if they perform well for most people -there will be lots of seed around- I hope.

Minnie has said that one of the parents is her own personal family heirloom but I don't think she's ever mentioned what the other parent is. And no description of that personal family heirloom that I'm aware of.

I don't think Minnie cared for me that much b'c when Big Zac was supposed to be a hybrid all those years and wasn't, I was telling folks that, which she subsequently confirmed when she visited GW at someones behest. And there are still places selling an OP version of it, last time I looked which was a couple of years ago.

Nope. Grub, now that I can grow so few plants I have to chose very carefully what I'm going to have Martha grow for me. I can only do about 12 plants total, maybe a couple more, down from hundreds. And for the past two years I've chosen some faves of long standing and nothing here at home I haven't grown before.

A few new ones were grown by bcday in NYS and Shoe in NC for seed production for my SSE listings. Another new one fron Germany was supposed to have been grown by CatnTree in ME but attempts to reach her have failed so I had to send in my listings yesterday, way past the due date of Nov 3rd, but I'd told Joanne at SSE that I'd be late, just hoping I'd hear from her. Now I hope I can find that seed pack so someone else can grow out some plants next summer, but I know Scott in Germany would send me more if I needed them.

Pretty please it's Carolyn, not Dr. Carolyn ,for I've been retired since early retirement in 1999, thank heavens.

The Big Zac being sold by Totally Tomatoes is the hybrid b'c Minnie said it was wrong parents or one wrong parent, I can't remember, they were using before and got the right parents to them. Additionally, it isn't crystal clear if the actual production of F1 seed was done properly even with what she sent in the first place, which could well have been the proper parents.

And the size of the OP version turned out, in retrospect, to be not that different from the proper F1 according to reports I saw on various message boards at the time.

The wrong BZ situation occurred with the OLD TT management before it was bought by Jung's, who now own it and have for several years along with Shumways, Vermont Bean Seed and Seymour's Flowers, all bought at the same time from that original owner.

I can speak to the TT BZ as being hybrid, but I can't speak to other sources, especially those who were offering it as an F1 when it apparently wasn't.

As I said above, most folks that I know that have grown the proper F1 get fruits in the 1-3# range, in general, without doing any disbudding or fruit removal or any of the other tricks that folks growing for competition do, but there are several OP varieties that can give that same size range on the upper end and also have good taste according to taste reports.

And those might include Zogola, Large Pink Bulgarian, Omar's Lebanese, Cuostralee, Red Barn, and of course Delicious, still the current World's Record holder.
