Since I've been online since the early 80's I've signed off every post, everywhere I was at different sites, as Carolyn. Yes, Dr. Carolyn was how I was known when I was teaching and doing research, but that was my professional life.

My private life was not as Dr. Carolyn, so I hope in the future that you and others would please refer to me as Carolyn.

Carolyn, sorry about that, but I know now

Okay, that explains why we use the coffee filter over the top of the fermenting jar. All I knew was that it worked well.

These two are what I use to wash the seeds with. The cola can is just a size reference. Salsacharley, I haven't tried saving seeds in water bottles yet. I'll most likely cut the tops off though.

Nothing to be sorry about at all.

And I would never use a coffee filter over the top of a container that I had set up for fermentation b'c the pores are so tiny they can usually block any bacteria and fungi that you want to fall into that container.

Someone above suggested using cheesecloth and that's fine b'c it would keep out mainly the flies/maggot formation that might occur.

I never even used cheesecloth since at any one time I could have up to four flats of one pint containers going at the same time, and maybe it's b'c I was raised on a farm, but the stink of fermenting tomato goop and the sometimes fly problems never bothered me.

This is a reply to what Carolyn wrote right above this post:

Okay, so no need for the coffee filter = cool.

The stench isn't a problem with me either. I have a stainless steel medical facility table that we use for cleaning fish on that I also use for saving seeds on.

I live in Johnson county, Texas. There are dairies everywhere, and flies are abundant. I might try the cheesecloth idea. I've had some cheesecloth in the way for about 15 years now. It would be nice to finally use it up.

lol-I'm the kind of person that only throws away stuff that can't possibly be used for anything A firm believer in "Waste not - Want not"
