No wonder there was an incident some years back when an air traffic accident was barely avoided - the fuel tank was empty, due to the confusion between Canadian / US measurements.

soo just to clarify ...when someone says all you need is a 10 " pot..... is that not equivalent to the no. 2 nursery size in many cases ???????

you know that elusive nursery "2 gallon" container that is in fact not a 2 gallon container .

Not a 2 gallon container in UK or US measurements....

Just a no.2 nursery container ...(or a 10 inch container ????)

(this sounds almost silly like Monty Python a bit ).

ha ha ha

I do not understand it. Narniangarden writes:
„5 gallons in Americanese.. 10 liters here“
I think that five gallons is about 23 liters.
When you write 10 gallons container, how many liters it ?

Yes, my mistake, Vladimir... For some reason, I was under the impression that 1 gallon = approximately 2 liters. I realized it's more.
Meanwhile, I'll stick with my 10 liter and 20 liter containers and leave gallons to those who are accustomed to them

Narniangarden,
I immediately realized that you were wrong. Sorry, but I do not understand what BlackBear writes. That's why I question gallons reopened.

ohhhh sorry !

so sorry for that measurement post.... it really is getting off topic.

I just find it a bit funny always how the

Nursery industry "Convention " / tradition of calling a size no. 2 container a 2gallon .(maybe this is just a North American Industry convention?)

And no matter what system you use (UK or USA gallon )

the nursery industry no.2 "2 gallon container " will Never in fact be

a real 2 gallons ........even the No.2 containers seem to have 4 variations or more.

Soooooo everybody Just gardens along using these "conventional terms " and leaves the empirical measurement to the scientists....ha ha ha

I guess the Tomatoes really don't care about this sort of stuff either.

That's why a pint of British ale is so much nicer. 19.2 US ounces.

never thought of that really ......hmmmmm

guess a nice UK pint of ..goodness would be fine on a real hot day after working on all those 2 gallon Tomato containers .

this year for me the 2 gallon horse race ...is producing Yaponskiy karlik , Silvery fir ,
and Venus and Yellow Pygmy as clear winners at this point .
geese even Tiny Tim is doing better than normal.

as said before in the 1 gallon/ 2 gallon horse race

at this Point Yellow Pygmy (yellow ) and Venus (orange )

are the best .......

But to my surprise .......Andrina the small Red...is out performing

red Robin, rejina Red, Mohamed, Minibel, elfin by a very wide margin.

hahms gelbe is Ok ...Cyril's , Kootenai and Sophies are developing

but what a surprise about Andrina !

For 2 gallon size I would recommend Utyonok. Finally found some seeds last year. That thing is ridiculous in production. I got more than 4 lbs from it in a 1.5 gallon (a bit more would have helped). Not terribly good for eating though, but really pretty plant, with the cupped leaves, quite unusual.

I was interested in Utynok for this venue as it was listed as "Dwarf " but could not find the seeds ...

so as I still had to procure some Tomato from the "U" container friendly listing... I ordered Uspehk instead and will catch Utynok later ...ha ha ha

So how "Not terribly good for eating" is Utyonok really ....is it like

tart so some folks who like the bite/tang would say it was an Ok taste ...but still very productive ??

It is tart, and I like tart. It just doesn't have much taste. Beautiful orange colour when cut, texture is not bad.
Oh, forgot about Maskotka. It's not a dwarf but a more compact determinate (leaves are more green than normal however). I had it in 2 gallon, was a bit less, 3 would be fine. Great taste, really, the best deteminate I've tried. Balanced taste.

Could you clarify something for me? You say you are using #2 pots industry standard, correct? If so they hold 6 quarts of potting mix. I'm in the business and use them all the time. A #1 holds 3 quarts max (0.62 IG), a #2 holds 6 quarts max (1.24 IG). So you are growing in a bit over 1 IG (6 US qts.).

Can I ask why such small containers? I'm sure you have explained that before but I'd appreciate if you could direct me to it. Are you interested is how they can be converted to hold 2x as much soil? We do it in the GH all the time. Not for tomato plants of course as I would consider them still far too small for ideal growth. But you could give it a try if interested in improving your odds of success a bit.
