The first tomatoes I ate this year were Campari tomatoes from the local HEB grocery store. They were not the best tomatoes but were certainly better than any grocery store tomato I have eaten. I bought them a couple of weeks ago for about $3.00 for 12 ounces. I was going to get some more this week but they were $4.27 for 12 ounces so I passed.

For sure the first tomato this year was a wrinkly F2 cherry that ripened off the vine, chopped into my scrambled eggs. And the second tomato was a home variety out of the freezer.
I haven't bought a store tomato in the last four years. I only go to the tomato aisle to gloat about the prices. But I'll have to do with frozen ones until.... I just don't know. Good to hear reviews of the indoor varieties, the house would be full of em if my renos were all done. |

Winds are projected to be high again today and I see the Brandywine Cherry - a large Cherry - colouring up.... The Black Krim Cherry was quite a strong flavour.

Supermarket, here, back in early January. One of those styrene foam trays with cling wrap.
The tomato's flavor was better than the wrap, but worse than the foam. |

Yesterday I could not resist and ate one of stored tomatoes Ramallet Mugró. I enjoyed the bread with butter and tomato (heart-shaped).

Red Robin or Rejina or Sweet 'n Neat F1 will be the first for me in 5b. I'll plant all three at the same time, so it will be a germination and maturity race. The race should be over in mid-May.

A container of Campari from the supermarket turned into a caprese salad. But not just any random container--I smell them all until I find the one that has the most tomato smell.
These, and an occasional container of cherries (if they pass the smell test) to use in a salad or as an ingredient in a dish will be it for tomatoes until mid July. |

I was at Trader Joes yesterday and bough some, called "pearl tomato" . $2.70/lb. not bad. What is more : it tastes pretty decent , juicy and tomatoey.
They weigh about 48 gr., avge. Gardeneer |

To be sure, this thread was intended to refer to the first grown and eaten.....not bought.
