I've left the pot top edge surround on and around cucurbit seedlings during some speed planting...you know, getting dark, gotta-get-them-in-and-walk-away-drill. Dark with a rain storm doom and gloom approaching. I put so many extra 'insurance' seeds in the same hill that i can't say it works. Made sense at the time.

In dry areas like mine the peat pot rim acts as a wick and dries out the soil inside the pot very quickly, the pot itself dries out and well they were worse than useless for me.

last year I used the vigoro ones from home depot (fail) this year I wanted to try them again so I got them from Johnny's and the roots are cutting through them with ease.

Small seedlings will not grow through peat pot.
Peat pots are pretty tough. Gardeneer |

Here is one of the more rare ones of mine. Most the time they don't grow through the pot.

Strange,
What is it I do that makes the roots grow all out of the pots and everywhere? I mean it is like a hair ball on every one of them. Even the ones I had sitting on the glass table did this. All I ever do is make sure the things stay moist. Worth |

Not the peat pots but the pressed paper pots, I like those a lot. It is easy to tell when they need water just by looking at the sides, if they are dry or not. I perforate all around the bottom edge with a knife so it can be remove easily when planting out. I get panicky when I can't find them at the nursery-sometimes I think they forget to stock them because they aren't popular. They work extreamly well for melons which don't like to have their roots disturbed.
