We had 14-1/2" of rain in 24 hours yesterday. None today. My subdivision is pretty much an island - can't go north to 290. Can't go West to 99. Can't go South to I10. You could go east to town this AM but tonight you couldn't come back the same way.
My in the ground garden is ok because it is a raised bed with a sand base and my 14 Earthboxes worked fine. MikeInCypress

Mike,
Glad to see you came out all right. Mom and Dad in Pasadena only had 5 inches of rain. What a difference 40 or so miles makes. |

I remember one time we got 16 inches in less than 24 hours down there on the coast and it wasn't from a hurricane.
On the flat coast they have what is called lift stations for drainage and sewer. When it rains like that they cant keep up and the water comes up out of the sewers like huge springs. Worth |

We once had a tropical depression sit over us and drop 13 inches in about 12 hours. Incredible for sure. I remember giving people a ride from the front of the subdivision to their homes. We would row around the flooded streets in our John boat ferrying the neighbors. I used to tie a rope to the boat and wade pulling the boat. That came to an end when I saw a raft of fire ants float past me.

I think the US record for rainfall in a 24hr period was in Alvin TX in the late '70's - Something like 40". that is a lot of rain!!!

High ground near Burton
We've had 10 or more inches and are currently getting rain from a cool front that wont last long. Lots of water ran across the property but we're on the high side. The tomatoes in the lower garden have some water standing between the rows but not much and the plants high on fresh mushroom compost seem fine. A new tomato patch west of the barn is high and the plants are thriving in new soil (no tomatoes ever) with organic fertilizer and mushroom compost.
Hope to spray fungicide this afternoon. |

I haven't been outside in three days for more than a minute or so, but from what I can see through the windows - everything looks okay. It has rained around 8" this week.

A church in our community has had a sign out front for the last few years that says
"Pray for Rain" and if this keeps up they may consider taking it down. |

There are days I thank Roy and Shelly for making me build raised beds. Some of the folks I know who had in-grounds got soaked beyond redemption --and we got another 1" of rain today when no one was looking. I'm wet, but my beds drain quickly. I was out this evening pruning vines and pulling weeds, then saw a ripe SunGold and paused to refresh.
