This guy is THE man at growing carrots. I love his videos because he has such great ideas and they are usually easy to follow.

Do them in a deep tub, a rubbermain container filled with Sunshine mix or similar, they grow very well like that.
Sugarsnax is a great carrot to. Johhnnyhat, scorzonera isn't the same as a carrot. It is a perennial and often is better the second year of growth, often the first year they are too small so are left in to grow bigger, after the second year they are fine just left in the ground and used as needed. |

I remember adashofpepper mentioning Sugarsnax. (It's odd calling him that.) I know he got some seeds the other day. One is Atomic something and a couple other varieties.

I just took a look at my carrot seed and I have some outdated ones, ideas for carrot viability is conflicting but 4 years seems to be the most, these are 5. If anyone wants them send me a PM.
Some are unopened Stokes seeds with 1000 in each packet and they are treated seed which is why I never used them as I bought them by mistake. The varieties are Dominion,Apache,Enterprise,Bolero (2 pks,) and Sugarsnax. The rest are not treated\ There is 2 Thompson and Morgan packs from the UK marked 2013 seed, both unopened. Flyaway 500 seeds and Tendersnax 250 seeds Finally I have a double packet of Burpees Danvers Half long. I sowed a few of these which germinated this year then put both packets together as I tore the opened one badly. There are some pretty good carrots there but the germination may be poor so I would sow heavily. PM me if you want them Last edited by Jeannine Anne; May 12, 2016 at 11:07 PM. |

I've grown carrots both in a bucket and in the ground. Both experiments produced well. My fave is Nantaise, a very sweet summer variety.. But I loved the mixed color heirlooms too (purple, white etc)..

I've been eyeing the carrot varieties at tradewinds, especially their color blend:
I would love to have carrots that looked that nice. No one else at market does. My soil is a heavy clay. I'm considering ordering a dump truck load of sand and building some beds. I don't know if it is worth the money to buy boards to enclose the raised beds, or if I should just make mounds. Here's a pic of commercial carrot production I found: |

Interesting - very sandy soil.
Looks like they mounded them up like when you blanch celery. Does anyone do that in their garden? |

I have 2x4 raised beds 30" wide . I pull dirt in from both sides to make a 12" plateau for beets, carrots ect. Just dug the last carrots 12-23-16 for vegi soup. I had to add clay, being in a flood plane corn would blow over. Didn't put the clay all over as you know some plants like loose soil.

No two boys. Well, men now. One is a couple months from 29. I meant to add, that I'll tell adashofpepper that people are responding to his thread. He is the younger of the two. Last edited by AlittleSalt; January 8, 2017 at 10:38 PM. |

We have heavy clay here too, and stony as well. I have read that adding sand to clay is a mistake, you will end with cement! Instead soften it up with compost, or make a raised compost bed.
Chantenay is a great carrot that does well in our soil, they are big and stubby and sweet and a lot of farmers in our area grow them. I picked up some seed last summer then realized it was too late to plant for 70 days, so I'll put them in springtime. I love the look of your rainbow carrots though, and Tradewinds is a good company, I was happy with the seed I got from them a few years ago. Also yellow carrots are delicious. I can't get enough of em. Need to grow those. I was buying bags of rainbow, first I'd eat all the yellow then white then orange and the poor purple ones would just sit there waiting.. and then I'd buy another bag. The best carrots I ever grew, I prepared the bed for my Dad. He told me to dig the bed really well to a depth of a foot and to take out every rock. We were planting in July as an experiment, to try to dodge the rust fly by planting when they were done and gone. The prep and the timing really worked, and the carrots were perfect with no extra legs or moustaches. |
