When we put in the garden here I stopped treating the yard with anything. I should seed it in the fall and spring but don't even do that.

A friend here has a garden that's dead-level and he has just the problem you describe. I keep telling him he needs to build some raised beds.
I have raised beds and also choose a garden site with about an 18inch drop over 40ft. Some of my friends gave up gardening with all the spring rains and not being able to plant with all the mud after tilling. I tilled once 20yrs ago then planted clover and added some stepping stones. All settled now. No issues. Good drainage. Full sun.

Why i like your method is it had me thinking about another area where it may work.
This past Sunday morning it was 48 at 6am, 70 by 9, 85 by 11am. Cold wet and damp from early dew and heavy fog, like just about every morning in my altitude mountain valley. No rain at all last week so bone dry clay by noon. I bush hogged a 1/4 acre of hay field, no seed yet. It is drying and plan to use it on some field grown toms...we shall see.

Use the same system here. To make it as easy as possible I use a yard sweeper to collect the clippings. Then I'll just drop the piles strategically in the rows without having to get off the mower. This system works best with a mower that has regular blades and a chute instead of mulching blades obviously.
