Except (Accept) has two C's not one and no X giving it a whole new meaning.
Now please tell me everyone pronounces them both the same and not just me.
I'm going back and changing it.
And dont forget use that trusty mineral oil to get the glue off.

Gee Worth, I never even noticed any typo. I knew what you meant .
Of course I pronounce "accept" and "except" differently because I'm a Brit, and also because I don't live in Texas. I tried that once, but everyone kept asking me "where y'all from?" and I had a crisis of confidence. .

I learned what "sailing" fans are too, and they having nothing to do with sailing .

Sorry, this has nothing to do with fermenting....

I have used the OxyClean before. Just dissolve a teaspoon into 1 cup of warm water and allow the seeds to sit for 5-10 minutes. Place them in a strainer and rub with your fingers until all of the gel is gone.

The bleach method that Ted mentioned does remove the pathogens though.

I've done the Oxiclean thing a couple times now, I can't see myself going back to fermenting! Easy and quick!

Not enough juice ? Get juice from another juicy tomato. Just don't mix the seeds.
I also mix in some plain yogurt whey which has lactic acid. It can further speed up the process.

The dollar store sells a pack of 24 plastic shot glasses for $1. That is what I have been using and I add a little water if needed. I set them on top of my frig for 4-5 days and they have always fermented ok.

I'll have to try the quick method of mechanically removing the gel.

Yes, it is easy and quick and also unproven against pathogens. I use it sometimes on seeds I intend for just my own use but if I am going to share the seeds, I always ferment them just to be safe.

In our climate, what pathogens on the outside of seeds are eliminated via fermentation?

That's a good question. I don't know, I just follow Carolyn's wonderful advise.

If you do a quick 2 minute clorox soak on fermented seeds, will it help?

Carolyn, or other experts. Any advice on fermentation vs. Oxiclean approach? Specifically related to seed surface pathogens? I'm getting about to ready to get into seed saving mode and I'm leaning toward the Oxiclean given the ease and speed, but I don't want to do that if there are good reasons not to.

Out of an abundance of caution I've got seeds fermenting. I read some of the links earlier in this thread that discuss TSP vs Oxiclean, but I'm still wondering what external pathogens are eliminated via fermentation that wouldn't be with Oxiclean. Any with solid information please share. The Oxiclean approach is very quick and easy but until I've got more info I'll continue with fermentation.

Thanks,
Justin
