Mine are getting huge as well. Just hoping I can keep mr. Squirrel away and any other bushy tailed critters. The plant is at least 7 ft.and loaded with tomatoes, some quite large. Can't wait.

My plant has a whole bunch of big tomatoes on it (as well as the biggest tomato I've ever grown, too). They weren't early for me, this year (still waiting), but most things had delayed ripening this year. I highly recommend this tomato based on size and productivity. I still don't know what it tastes like, however. It looks like it's about to start ripening some fruits (they're going from whitish green to a yellowish green).
@gssgarden Maybe you need some new seeds. That reminds me of Pruden's Purple; it's a great tomato, but it hasn't been productive for me, so far (I'm thinking I want to find someone who it has been productive for and get seeds from them to replace mine to see if it makes a difference). |

Mine are quite large as well and ripening. As I feared, the squirrels managed to destroy several large ones so now I am bringing them in as soon as they look like they are about to blush, but it's a battle of who gets to them first. I'm hopeful regarding taste. My plant has been very productive as well.

I'm not a good one for recommending based on taste, but the fruits began to ripen fast & furious and had a very good taste which caught the attention of my co-taste-tester neighbor, who says she will be asking me to grow some of these plants for her next season. Neither of us find new keepers very often despite the hundreds of varieties we've sampled so that says a lot. In a year of horrible splitting and very uneven ripening of sauce/paste types, these fruits are still very attractive, too and the foliage has held up remarkably well with no spraying, still providing plenty of cover for the remaining tomatoes. Twenty one fruits so far, ranging from 11.5 oz to 26.5 oz, most at least 1 lb. and still lots on the vine.

Ate my first one today. Very good flavor and texture. My neighbor grew one plant that I had given her and she has one fruit that is absolutely huge - must be close to 2 pounds! My plant is still pumping them out - the question is the weather. Yesterday we had a big drop in temperatures and it will be warm but we are north and I dont' know how much longer before I have to shut it down.

Take two slices of lightly toasted bread. Add two layers of perfectly cooked hickory smoked bacon slices. Then put a single layer of crunchy iceberg or romaine lettuce. Next, carefully carve a half inch thick slab of George Detsikas Italian Red tomato and gently lay it in there covering the entire bread with the one slice. Okay now, have you seen the ladies on the Carl's/Hardees commercials. Well, that's your next move. Just open wide and shove the edge of that puppy in your mouth. Bite down and know what heaven is really gonna be like.
This tomato is a must grow for everyone. The flavor will even turn the heads of those who are totally biased toward Brandywine.

Not sure where everyone else got theirs. The seeds I planted out this year came from Tracy (tam91), who I believe was the one who originally distributed seeds on this forum.
Sorry didn't have a chance to grab pictures of the plant, it was raining and was in a rush. Last edited by Scooty; August 24, 2016 at 02:57 PM. |

Tania lists it but no seed sources.Tracy wanted to send seeds toTania, did so and I bet Tania is trying to grow it out this summer, before she has to move.
I helped Tracy name it,she at first wanted to call it Gorgeous George until I pointed out he was a famous wrestler. She went back and got more info and that's how it ended up being called George Detsikis Italian Red.. She then sent me a box of fruits, and I do think she was the one who also sent me seeds, but since I'm so late with seed offers it didn't get listed, probably not until this Fall. But I did send seeds to several seed vendors for growout this summer, so if all went well with them, there should be a number of places selling seeds. One can always go to the seed subforum WANTED and ask for seeds, but I like to see folks support the seed vendors, especially the family owned ones since for a lot of work their profit margin is very low.
