I use plastic knifes broken in half and write the variety on them when they're in solo cups. That gets transferred to in ground when I transplant. Then I make laminated name tags and tie those to the cages/supports. (Old business cards marked with a sharpie - some of which are several years old and look like I just made them.) Too many times I had a critter steal the one in the ground so everything is double marked now.

Before I seen this I would have used a Sharpie.

Thanks to Spike for saving me some grief.

Some amazon reviews say the extreme sharpies don't work all that good either. link

This year I scored 2 long metal Venetian blinds for free. I use tin snips to make pointed markers I pushed down into the soil. A standard Sharpie hasn't shown any signs of fading yet.

Myron, was there more than the one review this links to? It would be good to get a consensus. Thanks for posting this.

What ever direction you have to do this just point the label away from the sun so sunlight isn't shinning on it all day long.
If it's in the shade it wont fade.

I could use the Solo cups, that I used already, cut off the entire bottom so I have an inch high (2.54cm) ring that would stay around the base of the plant all year.
Fantastic idea! I will have to try this!!

I'll post what didn't work for me. Used Sharpie Fine Point Permanent Marker to label plastic cups. I was stunned during transplanting time that all the writings have disappeared. It's not so "permanent" afterall.

Ooh... I now see Sharpie has been discussed at length above. Wish I'd known earlier!

I use a sharpie to label the solo cups when I up pot, variety name, etc., and then use a grease pencil to mark on the inside of the cup triangle, so both sides are marked, then hang them eye level so I don't have to get down on the ground.

I'm lazy, LOL.

That's a great idea, I'll have to do that, too! I couldn't possibly get down on the ground....well, I could get down, but someone would have to help me up, LOL!

In my garden tools, I have a stapler and a hole punch now- some of the other gardeners look at it funny, LOL.

It's real easy to cut the solo cup into a sort of wide triangle piece that I push partway into the ground as I plant each little tomato plant, then come along later and pull them up one at a time and attach them to the support via the hole punched in a corner. The grease pencil on the white inside is just an insurance thing against fading- the sharpies so far- knock on wood- haven't faded badly here.

Marking the plants in a word doc garden plan is the final back up, in case something happens to the labels.

Lowes (or home depot I am sure) sells these. My husband uses them on jobsites and the writing never rubs off or fades The writing might be on pipe for years sitting outside.
