I think as a tomato grower that likes purple tomatoes, you have to grow both eventually. I mean it's really just a question when to grow either one! They're both different enough and good enough to warrant being grown...

I am giving CP a leave of absence but will grow IS PL version this year.It is recommended by Bill, to do better in the high humidity and heat of the deep south.

When I live in wnc CP did just fine, they sell CP at the farmers markets there and all of the box stores carry it. Not arguing that IS does better with the humidity but CP grows just fine in NC...

I think that the varieties that have done well in our hotter months would likely do the same in the hotter months in NC. Bill |

I am looking at the tomato planting cells. All 4 of the IS PL are up and growing. None of the IS RL germinated. I'll give the IS RL a few more days, and then will probably be replacing them with either CP or Eva Purple Ball.

That's what I'm thinking too Bill. I traded seeds with someone today, and am getting some different IS RL ones soon. I did plant some Eva Purple Ball today.

Robert, How long did it take for your seeds to germinate ? That is from the early to the bulk of them.
I put my seeds in the cells on 14th.( 3 days now ). So far nothing is up. I think it take 6 days for most of them. I am not in hurry but this nice January weather makes me itchy. It is 10 pm and temperature out side (per my remote sensor ) is 52F. My garden bed is ready.

What I've noticed is 4 to 6 days is pretty common. I try to keep the room they're planted in around 74 degrees. Some varieties do take longer though. The IS PL was up in 4 days. They are already 2" tall, and I'm having to move the lights up a little daily.

I grow them both and they taste the same to me. In fact I'd say the majority of "black" tomatoes taste almost identical to me.

I agree. But I cannot describe the taste, Definitely not acidic and not sweet. Call it COMPLEX

Yes complex and rich. A good heat ripened ISPL is like a aged steak or fine wine. So many flavors now my mouth is watering

A good CP tastes like 'food' to me. A full flavored bite that just lingers in my mouth for minutes afterwards that no other can do. I know, I know, it's personal preference but I always grow at least a dozen Blacks in my 30 plant garden. With an even amount of Reds and Yellow/Orange, and a few Green.
Trying Spudakee for the first time this year! Greg |

I'm trying Spudakee as well, thanks to Bill. Probably try to graft a few.

I think y'all will like Spudakee. It has been a must plant for me since the first time I tried it. I had one bad year with it but then all my blacks and most of my others did terrible that year because we had so much rain and Septoria that the ones that survived the Septoria were all tasteless and mushy.
