Down here in southwest part of NC , we have true spring. Most fruiting and flowering threes are in bloom. So are maple trees. Cole crops are having grand ole time. Even volunteer tomatoes are popping up on the compost dug out of the holes. But maters and peppers have to wait about 3 to 4 weeks.
But then this is the deep south.

Yep early spring! I have an old injury that hurts only at spring and fall. It hurt back in January. I was surprised and doubted myself and thought that my boo boo was coo coo. So I wrote it down on the calendar, Jan.23rd.
Then Punxsutawney Phil predicted more winter and I doubted myself again. Told my kids that Phil is wrong, winter is done. There might some small dustings of snow but nothing lasting or feet of snow...so get that homework done! I am going to stick my neck out today and say not only are we going to have an early spring but a long one too. Not early spring and early summer. So I am planting peas. Lots of peas...and a few potatoes if I can find some good varieties locally. |

About as southwest as you can get in this state. I've lived here my whole life and I believe winter isn't quite over yet. Seen some big snows in March and a couple of good ones in April. |

I live farther south than most everyone here and it isn't considered the deep south.

This is my second season down here. So I could be off. According to the weather statistics our LFD is about 7th of April that is another month of possible frost. That is why I will hold on planting maters and peppers until then. No worry on cole cropes . They have survived 6F few nights in a row.

Looks like a late spring here in southern B.C. colder with lots of snow. Pushed open a road to a old farm that I keep an eye on.

Todays weather was cool and over cast. Needed a jacket. Raced around pruning the peaches asap. The buds are swelling. Moved the onions and scallions and garlic out to the green house, NO sense taking up room inside. Potatos just waiting for bed to be prepared. Too late to order potatoes this year given the 20 days early. |

I don’t know where you are in southwest NC, but here in Cherokee co, you are really taking a chance by planting before early May ( tomato plants into the garden that is ). Last edited by KCinNC; March 7, 2018 at 08:20 PM. |

We do have early spring for sure. Daffodiles have been flowering for a while. My tulips are up but no flowers yet. Maples have their colorful cpters. Bradford pears passed flowing and now have leaves. So are plums. Well dandelions have been flower for a good while.they stand frost like lettuce. I have sown Fenugreek. They are up and won,t budge under frost.
Two to 3 weeks to plant tomatoes and peppers AND eggplant. Then it will be time to direct sow cucurbits. My garlic , onions , parsley, rosemary and oregano over wintered and saw 6F quite frw nights.

Love this photo! It needs the tiniest bit of burning done to the smaller trees that are right behind and to the left of the house. That would make the house pop more. That's a million dollar photo right there I totally can see it on calendars and jig saw puzzles.

Here's another article, with no implications on the political aspects of the subject.

There was an article in my news feed last night about coastal flooding, the latest study which recalculated the expected impacts. The example given: a 1.5 C increase in global temperature would see New York have a "100 year flood" once a year. 2.0 C increase, NY would have a 100-yr flood twice a year. Even once a year would be hard to live with....
I guess I'm glad to be km's inland and upland. Would have loved to live on a beach, but not the way I'd like my happy home to end. |
