Most likely user error since a cross would have had to have been with another dwarf, brown tomato as to have maintained the homozygous recessive genes with a heterozygous leaf shape in the resulting hybrid grown last year.

Did you grow a brown, potato leaf dwarf two years ago?

I've gotten dwarf project mutants from seed purchased directly Victory, Sample, and Heritage. I've gotten mutants from shares. It happens. Mutants are for the project probably 1/50 or 1/60 of the seeds I germinate (random guesstimate for me at least), but when I get mutants, it's a fair bet that a large percentage from the originating seed bag are also mutants.

Sometimes they really good mutants. Sometimes they are complete spitters. I sent Craig fruit from a red Sean's Yellow Dwarf mutant a while back. Similar to Sweet Scarlet in taste but more mild. There are off-type red/pink Sweet Sue that have appeared in grow outs.

PL and RL are the easy ones to catch. The ones not so easy are when you grow out a single type and try to figure out if they are "correct to type." Russian Swirl and Whereotokai, all the black/purples, etc...

This year I had Crimson Sockeye mutants, RL Japanese Black Triffle, and a few others that I don't recall.

Most likely my error then, Lee. These were seeds from the mmmm swap, so only time will tell if it crossed as you described.
I'm also growing Russian Swirl and Whereotokai, so plenty of opportunity for additional scrutiny when those ripen.

To me at least, Russian Swirl is much preferred over Whereotokai.
