Same sunlight, yes. Same planting date, yes. Just different soil--not quite the "just" part. You have two variables--soil and root environment. That soil --pot vs. in-ground--will experience different temperatures and differing fluctuations in moisture levels and thus differing levels of stress. The experiment Annecros mentions would eliminate the root environment variable. You know, the dirt and the dirt.

I'm just worried about the more/less vigorous seedling variable. That happens, but it doesn't always translate into a more/less vigorous plant.

I can't control everything, but, honestly, it is mostly for fun. And to see if I can eat a tomato that reminds me of other tomatoes past. Not interested in publishing a paper, just to have fun with seedlings that I would otherwise give away or turn into cuttings to try to keep alive and transplant later. And, I just love getting dirt under my nails. And, a tasty tomato is welcome anytime.
