Hopefully Cecil will come in and give us the history of Country Orange. In the meantime, here are two more old threads, more or less in order, that might fill in a couple of gaps:

I read both links bc and I'm not sure if I really know more than I did before.

As in were there ever any Boondock plants/fruits from the pack?

So Cecil's seed is from the bag of tomatoes that were from someone he gave Boondock plants to, OK, got that, but how many plants? And what did his Boondock plants give?

And if Cecil saved those seeds from the bagged orange tomatoes and planted them what did he get.

And at what point did he decide to name it even though he thought it was a wrong variety and hadn't grown it out, as he said.

Ah, sweet mystery of life at last I've found you.

I don't know if Cecil grew it out or not... and he wasn't my seed source... and I believe that many no longer here may be growing it.

A commercial pack of Boondocks seed from TGS produced Orange PL plants. Grower saved seed and gave it a working name of Country Orange and traded seed. I got seed as well as some others ...

Now if the saved seed is producing RL & PL plants (with the same traded name of Country Orange) sounds like a cross to me ...

There is nothing wrong with "getting lucky" and getting all PL plants ...
After growing 12 F2's from the Dwarf Project, I've learned anything is possible !

My RL Country Orange is about 4-5' tall and has a good amount of fruit set....one will soon be ripe but not as large as some of the others on the vine. Patty

Okay, this is all the info I have.

I bought one pack of Boondock seeds last season, from TGS. I gave several plants away. All were that pretty orange. The flavor was really zippy, reminded of Orange Juice. I named it Country Orange and fermented seeds and sent them to & fro and gave the remaining seeds to a friend. He also grew them this year and got the same orange tomato with PL.
I did leave Linda know about the seeds.

Maybe the bees liked them, too.

One would expect the RLs to have
smaller fruit, because the bees like
to visit some prolific cherry covered
with blossoms first before spreading
their largesse through the rest of
the plants. (They see that big splash
of yellow on the cherry plants and just
can't resist.)

Hey, if anyone figures out that this is actually variety X, let me know, because, it is one of the most unigue favors I have ever had in a tomato. Even the juice is orange. YUM!

Post note and totally off topic,..... I didn't get many and they are small, but these Moretons are very good. I rather doubt they even are Moretons, because they are only 6 ounce, but mmmm mmmm good.

Cecil, did you grow out any of the presumed Boondock plants yourself?

In another post here you said that the person you gave the plants to brought you a bag with the orange ones and said they came from the plants you gave him.

What else was that person growing in case the labeling was wrong. You said that you did let Linda at TGS know about the seeds. What did she say?

Seems to me if all the plants from the pack of seeds were all orange ,, this seed must have been grown out to become that stable.

I lost all my seedlings before planting last year and had to buy :-(

He only had six varieties, all grown by me and all accounted for, except for Boondocks. There were no yellows/orange planted.

Linda did not answer my letter. I only told her about it, so she would know, I was not interested in replacements (which I mentioned in the letter). I wasn't expecting an answer, I told here the orange tomato was excellant anyway.

Differences between AGG & Country Orange are blatant ...

Color Difference: AGG / Yellow Orane - CO / Bright Orange
(digital cam / lighting doesnt really capture this)
(I'm going to take slicer and leaf pics tonight)

Production: AGG = Moderate / CO = Very productive

Flavors are very different -

Both are disease tolerant ...

Cecil, can you clear something up for me? I thought all of the Country Orange were descended from that one orange Boondocks tomato that your friend brought back.

Now it sounds like several friends got seedlings in the Spring of 2006 that you grew from the original TGS packet, and last Fall each of those friends said they got orange fruit on PL plants?

I'm asking because at first you said you sowed Persimmon seeds from TGS and they were no shows, so you reseeded with Boondocks, and then decided you must have stirred up the lost seed and caused the Persimmon to germinate.
