Hmmm... very interesting. I was definitely lulled in by her very good marketing. What led me there was a great interest in the varieties you were growing Andrey. A google search for Orange-1 seeds was all it took. Carolyn has offered to send me some real Orange-1 seeds in the Fall, so maybe next year I will be able to grow it! Anyways, all this makes it clear how many things in our world are not what they seem...

Barnowl, I can send your Orange-1 seeds during the next week. Just PM me your address.
Seeds are from my 2007 harvest and originally came from Leonid Mishin (Belarusian Institute of vegetable Gardening) the father of Orange-1, Vezha and many other great Belarusian tomato, pepper and eggplant varieties

**** Andrey, as posted above I already have Barnowl's address and did offer to send him Orange-1 seeds and could also send him the Vezha you mentioned as well as Vodar, all from you originally, and who knows how many other varietis I have. But Barnowl asked for Orange-1 seeds so that's what I'll send as soon as my tomato seed packing table is ready and the seeds are within reach. Had to dismantle everything when my brother came this summer in order to open up the large sofa sleeper for him.

Thanks to you both, you are very kind... And I sure wouldn't mind receiving the Vezha and Vodar varieties as well . I searched the varieties and found this info on them from a "Suze" on Dave's Plantfiles:
Vodar -- 65-70 days, compact indet, reg leaf plants, good yield of lovely 5-6 oz. scarlet fruits, excellent taste. Russian variety. Vezha -- an indet, reg leaf plant with an approx. DTM of 75-80 days. Produces round red 4-6 oz fruit, fair to good flavor. Introduced in 1994 by the Belarusian Res. Inst. of Veg. Gardening from a cross between Pionersky and Zhebendago. |

I was not as impressed with Vezha as several others have been as to taste, but Vodar was a real standout in my Spring '07 garden because it was the earliest decent sized red that I *really* liked the taste of. Growing it again this fall, and it has set like crazy, so it might have a bit of heatsetting potential as well. I'll also go ahead and comment on Orange-1, since that was also mentioned in this thread. I've grown it one time (in '06), and was rather impressed. Taste was good to very good (not an 8-9-10, but a solid 7), but what was particularly noteworthy was that I started the seeds about 5-6 weeks later than usual, and still managed to get a good crop from it even in a hot/drought year. Btw, you were my source for all three (SSE request from '06 Yearbook). |
