Hi Ella,
I've got 15 of the varieties ungrafted and ready to plant plus 3 varieties in the seedling stage. I've also got a (nearly) complete set of back-ups that I've just started grafting to plant out later. I want plants in the ground ASAP to beat the heat, but I also want to play around with grafting. So I'll basically have 2 sets of plants . Not what I'd planned on considering that I wanted to cut back, but my timing got all messed up this year and I'm just "going with the flow" Anne |

Paul Robeson is on the short side for me and would work. BW from Croatia gets huge. Wisconsin 55 could work in a pot. Stump is not a stump and is rather large.

Jonnyhat-
Fred says that Maglia Rosa is great for containers and I grew PBTD in a container without a problem. Raybo grows Brandywine from Croatia in a container every year. Black Krim, Big Rainbow, Carbon Copy, Jap. Black Trifle, Tidwell German, Paul Robeson, Raspberry Giant, Stump of the World, Delicious, Moya, Isis Candy and Sungold were all large plants for me. Thanks. I was gifted some nice 5 gallon pots so I am looking forward to trying these guys in containers.
doesn't look like Liz Birt is going to germinate or Ron's CC, both of which I am very disappointed about... everything else though is up and attem |

I too had trouble with Liz Birt which was a bonus from one of the seed companies. Granted I only planted 3 seeds, but 2 germinated but could not shed the helmet head. Most of my other seeds had a very high seed to seedling rate.

Aclum--I know grafting can make a stronger plant, but what about hardiness? Does it have to share hardiness level w/graft, a combination of both (ie does it change primary hardiness?), or what? Do the days to maturity follow the graft, or the graftee. I have read up on this, but wondered about first-hand experience...

Was Blackberry very hardy? I love my Black Krim (so productive and reliable in my zone 5), but the name Blackberry sounds yum!

As I understand the root stocks, in addition to whatever soil borne resistance that it might possess, usually they have a more aggressive and bigger root ball. The genetics of the scion is not affected.

Do you raise your own root stock? I've seen stock for sale, but wondered if you could grow those from seed. Now, back to the other stuff, there is no genetic overlap with grafting end-result? In improvement of either stock or scion in regards to environmental sensitivities?

Since the stock is so hardy, does it overtake the genetic predisposition of the scion?
