Dan, I have one lonely 46x F1 plant growing that was pretty optimistic earlier in its life, and set a total of 6 fruit at one time. I noticed 2 had turned red, and tried them, not expecting much flavor, because it had been neglected while the fruit were developing. I see why this cross would make you want to grow them! Even with the neglect it suffered(we all got the flu- and it dragged on a while), it was delicious! Very good flavor, with just a little extra sweetness. I am going to pot this up to a larger pot, and it has already been given a place of honor in the house. I can't wait to see how the next fruits taste, since they will be maturing when the plant is being well cared for!

Dfollett Crosses 2016
I grew out several f1s of dfollett’s crosses in Spring and Summer of 2016.
The F1 were from
64X MMF F4 X Dwarf Goldfinch (Finchy)
19x MMF f4 X Ambrosia Orange (Brosie)
20x MMF f4 X Maglia Rosa (Maggy)
40X MMF F4 x (Lithium Sunset x Pink Boar x Cherokee Lime Stripes) (Limey)
60X MMF F5 x Striped Balkan Tiger (Tiger)
Here are some pictures of the F1’s.
Dan I will be starting F2 seeds for these soon.
Unless you have some F3’s of these crosses you want me to start.

I have few F2s of some of them about to ripen now. I've not had very good success finding anything to grow for any of those this winter. I have been selecting only for micros and discarded most of them that looked like they would exceed 20".

Some crosses had quite a few that stayed small while others didn't. For some reason, those particular crosses didn't have many micros. If my memory serves me, I have one or two from some of those I kept in spite of being taller than I wanted due to their pedigree. I should have F3 seed from any that are interesting (if any are) within the next three weeks. What's your time frame for planting?

I intend to try more F2s this summer looking for multi flora dwarfs. We can compare notes next fall.

I can speak toward 19x. Like Dan, the micro ratio I observed in the F2 was very small. I sowed about 400 seeds. Potted up the smallest 8 after a few rounds of thinning. Of the 8, I kept the 3 smallest. 1 is micro in the sense it is going to stay under 14" or so. Two others quickly got to about that height and I topped them. One I'd call a micro still. The other by the internode spacing I'd call a big micro/very small dwarf.

I should start to get ripe fruit from these soon. If any taste great I'll save seed and grow some F3 outside this year. Otherwise I'll only grow more F2.

I received several crosses in MMMM swap and sowed one of them (14x -F3 -2 RL) already. Hoping it really stays small and not grow into a huge tree on my windowsill..!

Sorry - forgot to ask: Where do you have 'the codes' aka explanations for different crosses?

I’ll start by telling you about the one you mentioned then give the ‘codes’ for the rest (I use numbers because I’m lazy and don’t like writing out the parent’s names). 14X-F3-2 is an F3 from my plant 14X-F2-2. It is an F3 from this cross – Mohamed X (Red Robin X Rose Quartz Multiflora F3). The F2 reached 12” in height, was RL, multiflora, and had red, cherry-sized, roundish fruit with a small nipple. I didn’t make any note of flavor.

That was one of the first micro crosses I made and I was looking for micro multiflora and wasn’t paying specific attention to flavor. For what it is worth, I think there is something ‘magic’ in that Red Robin X Rose Quartz Multiflora cross that ChrisK made that is the mama to most of my crosses. I have made a lot of crosses with it and have not had any that tasted bad. Some are obviously better than others, but I have liked them all (and part of that could well be the “IKEA effect” playing with me). I’d love some feedback on flavor for the 14X you have.

Here is the list of the crosses I’ve made and confirmed so far. The missing numbers are the attempted crosses that did not take. Many of the crosses have unstable parents on both sides, so there will be segregation even at the F1, not to mention the next couple of generations.

Thanks, that's very detailed. I got a few others from that list (some PLs iIrc), would try them if the parentage looks interesting.

Ahh, I'm glad the pedigree got Mohamed, it's been a consistent one (better than RR imho) every year I have grown it.

OK, I found that there are seeds for 11/12 x-f3, both a RL and PL version. I might try the PL one.

Default Want to Help Dwarf Hunt?

I don’t have the time or desire to create an extensive project around these dwarf and micro multifloras. However, there is obviously more that could be done with them than I will ever be able to do. If anyone wants to do some dwarf/micro hunting, I have plenty of F2 seed for many of those crosses on the list above, I’d be happy to share them with anyone interested in growing some out. I’d have plenty of all of them if the dang deer had left the garden alone last summer – but that’s another story. Dwarfs are easy to find – micros are more difficult. All I ask is that they report back here and return some seed to me for anything they really like. I’m sure there are some interesting micro and dwarf varieties lurking in them thar seeds somewhere.

I also am getting quite a few different F3 (and some F4) seeds from micros and dwarfs I’ve grown out and liked. They should be fixed for dwarf and possibly micro. If someone wants help hunt for interesting varieties but doesn’t want – or doesn’t have the space – to play with lots of seedlings, they could grow some of them out. Just don’t expect everything you grow to be a winner. At the early F stages, there are more that are not worth growing again than are.

If you’re interested, send me a PM and we can decide what you want to work with. I'm not the most organized person in the world. If I told you I'd send you some seed and haven't, let me know. It was an oversight, nothing intentional.

I'll be growing out a few more of the 13x. Hopefully, I'll get better results than when I tried them in the fall. I think I only got a handful of tomatoes from 4 or 5 plants last time around. There was one plant that produced late and I only got one tomato, but I thought the taste was pretty good - probably a 7.5 better than all the rest. I saved seeds from that one and will grow out and see how it does. Hopefully something good to report in a few more months.

I grew out several F3 ‘s in 2016 from the following crosses
11/12 f3 -3
15x F3 -2
14x F3-1
13xF3-2
I had some good tasting tomatoes from some of the plants.
14X (MMF F3XMohamed)
I had one plant that was especially good. It was Plant 2. It was a RL red cherry.
I had 14 tomatoes the first time I picked and another time I had 23 tomatoes from one picking.

From 11/12x F3 -3
I had one plant plant 1 that was a potato leaf .
It had good flavor.

13xF3-2
This selection had 2 good plants .
Plant4 was a brown.
Plant 2 was striped with lots of tomatoes.

15x F3-2
This had lots of red cherries was good tasting.

I did. Sorry for not responding. I just processed seeds from several interesting F3s. They are drying now. I will pack some up and send them Wednesday.

I just saw 2 of my micros from last year are starting to form flower buds again! If so, these will be among the earliest tomatoes on my patio.
