I know what you mean. It seems that no matter how many limbs and sticks from the storm I pick up the next day there seem to be more of them. I think with all the wind we have had that some of them must be blowing out of the nearby trees. Maybe by fall they will be gone. I guess now that I was lucky in that my plants had only been in the ground a couple of weeks when the storm hit. I lost a lot of blooms and I'm sure it delayed fruiting but the plants were still pretty small so the losses were minimal. In the two weeks since they have recovered nicely and most are now setting fruit.

Thanks to all of you enablers, I ordered TTF and am running a very limited trial comparing it to Neptune's Harvest Fish & seaweed and to a granular/liquid fert combo. Since I only have triplicate plants of 2 varieties of tomato and 1 variety of tomatillo, it's not super scientific, but it will be interesting nonetheless.

My question is, if it rains a lot, do you still use TTF at normal strength on the same basic schedule or do you skip it so that you don't over water your plants?

My other potential issue is later in the summer when I'll be out of town and leaving the non-tomato lovers in charge and will be lucky if they get watered at all. Should I give the plants a stronger dose before leaving?

If it rains alot the mobile nutrients will spend even less time in the root zone. Are you talking about in the ground? Or in a container? If its in a container, the mix should be sufficiently well drained that it is practically impossible to overwater. If its in the ground, it all depends on your soil as to the likelyhood of overwatering. In either case, I dont think increasing the concentration is a good idea. You might want to add a slow release formula to tide it over while you are gone.

Good question. They're in the ground.

Default Texas Tomato Food and Earthboxes

Hi,

I have been growing in Earthboxes for 5 seasons using the organic fertilizer from Earthbox. As many have talked about, the organic fertilizer seems to be all used up about half way through the season. I still get a nice harvest but know it could be more productive.

I just bought the Urban Farms Texas Tomato Food and wondered how you are using it The amount you use, how often, do you pour it in the tube or on to the potting soil? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I called Urban Farms and they said to ask Tomatoville because people have been using it for a few years in EB's and doing different things to try and see what works best.

Thank you!

Jenny

I make up a 2-gallon batch of TTF (as instructed on container), then pour enough to fill a 20-ounce water bottle; then down the tube. I do it once a week every Saturday (easy to remember, and that gives the plants something to look forward to every weekend). Some rows I have to crawl thru on my knees because the growth and production is so out of control. (A good thing, I guess.) I had Starfire Isis plants that were 12 feet tall last year; 25-30 tomatoes off of my Fish Lake Oxheart plant. IMHO; TTF is worth every penny. I use it on my pole beans and peppers, as well. Similar results.

I used about 1 tsp per box per week. I didn't start adding it until later in the season when the box containing 2 San Marzano's pooped out on me. I also added a new fertilizer strip to that box but I started feeding it with TTF first. I used TVF on the pepper boxes - 1 tsp per box. In both cases I mixed the 1 tsp into a small bottle of water to dilute it some then dumped the whole thing into the box. I figured 1 tsp per gallon is the standard dilution and each box has at least 1 gallon in the reservoir.

I may start feeding them earlier this year but I haven't as of yet.

I have 18 gallon home made swc's and the reservoir is approximately 2-3 gallons. I do the normal swc container type of setup with lime, fert strip, but I also use mycos on the roots and a couple of handfuls of earthworm castings in the box in the planting hole. Then I dump two tablespoons of TTF down the reservoir once a week from the time of planting to the end. I get incredible fruit set and lots of beautiful tomatoes. I havent had a plant yet that didnt have really good fruit set.

I've been saying 1 tsp but after reading Fiishergurl's reply I think I used 1 Tbsp per box . . . whatever the normal strength is for 1 gallon!

My son was up here from Mobile a few weeks ago and I gave him a new gallon jug of TTF to try in his raised beds. He is absolutely amazed at how much better his plants look and how many more tomatoes they are producing than in the past. He's going to need the link to Urban Farms very soon.

And seed store. It's about 15 minutes from the airport. They had the quart sizes.

Got a question on the TTF....

I installed a drip system this year with t tape. Will the TTF work in a tank to hook up to the system?

TTF sounds great. I wish that I could find it around here.

Don't take what I'm saying as the definitive, but Raybo mentioned to me that he uses TTF with his SWCs in a EZ-Flo system that is plumbed up to all of his containers.

I think you would be fine.
