No joke, The overall Austin garden shown today, April 1, 2018. Carrots and onions in the plot on the right. Cold frame in background on right, 800-gallon water tank on left. About a dozen tomato plants to be grown in sturdy cages. Stupice, with tiny fruit. "Wispy" Sioux, with turned over leaves. Two of Mr. Lofthouse' Ot' Jagodka, the smaller of which is grafted onto Supernatural rootstock. Recovering from the graft has set the plant back. Surprisingly, roots of Ot' Jagodka developed as strongly as did Supernatural, now see no reason to graft that variety...unless we find signs of soil-born disease later in the season.

Reminded me of a Andy Griffith Show when Mr. Roscoe Darlin was offering 40 acres of good side hill with strong boulders to Andy if he would marry Roscoes daughter Charlene.

Sowed these 12/15 and will be tasting the first fruits any day. Seems like a really long time for such a low return. Hoping to find a more productive variety and will sow seed much earlier next time. First, Jochalos, then Pinocchio Orange, lastly Vilma.

Thank you for your critique of my photo gentlemen that for whatever reason the uploader, not me, turned sideways. Do you have anything to add about the plants?


I do actually live on a very steep slope. A mountainside overlooking the straight of Georgia on Vancouver Island Yet somehow in April I have some pretty tomatoes growing that I planted all by my little ol self.
Pretty nifty I think, sideways photo or not.

Those are some beautiful plants, KarenO, and just because these jokers don't know how to grow plants sideways to make picking easier, doesn't mean you shouldn't. Some day they might gain as much expertise as you, if they live long enough. Pay them no mind.

Cross between Early Girl and Black Krim. I've read that the Early Girl heritage is "supposed" to make an earlier black variety. We'll see.

Box Car Willie is one that Carolyn Male recommended eons ago, along with Arkansas Traveler and Cherokee Purple. I'm growing all three. They're classics...just like me
