Best tasting eggplant

I grew Gretel last year. It was bland. I was disappointed in it.
I'm trying the old Black Beauty this year, but hope to also try Korean Red and Ping Tung Long, and maybe Rosa Bianca.

Rosa Bianca were a bit too small and unproductive to my liking.

An Asian one called MA-Zu produced very well for me last year. Growing it again this year.

Burpee's Early Midnight, Purple Rain, White Star (although white types yellow easily under hot summer sun), Nadia (quite rugged), Harris' Classic. These are pretty much in order as I see them.

Kamo, Mitoyo, Kurume

Kurume is even better than Ichiban, and it's open-pollinated, too, so you can save your own seeds from all three of these varieties.

I grew Kamo and Barbarella this year.
Kamo was good, Barbarella was better. Both are similar shape, Barbarella was larger and more productive.
I usually oil, salt, and roast slices.

My best tasting is Millionaire, a Japanese hybrid. Productive and mild creamy flavor.

I like Listada Di Gandia very much, and grow it most every year. Thai Purple Ribbed was also really good this season.

How is the production on Listada? Whenever I see pictures or videos of it it just seems like a poor producer. I'm trialling various things this year, in all colors except white (been disappointed this year in the taste, great texture for frying but very mild taste), also a few classic colored hybrids.

My Listada definitely keeps up production with Black Beauty and Black King hybrid. I get more requests from neighbors for Listada than any other eggplant or tomato.

I'm in southeast Virginia though were summers get hotttt!

The latter is the best., good size, good taste and super producer.

I thought Ichiban was a hybrid and long discontinued? Where can I find seeds? I even saw a guy on youtube with a supposed ichiban 2, but I can't find any trace of such thing existing.


This year I'm growing Thai long Green, Ping Tung, Kamo, Madonna F1, Aragon F1, Irene F1. The last 3 are classic color, Aragon being also very big (2 lb and bigger). Will see how good they taste, but I have a feeling the hybrids will be better.

Maybe that's why I didn't see any plants for Ichiban last summer. It's a great eggplant. I enjoyed it in 2017.
