Garlic planted

My fall planted garlic is finally looking better with new growth. A few snacks of Miracle Grow and recent lack of hard frosts have really helped.

I almost did a really bad thing. I had planted out about six cloves on March 5 at the end of a bed just as a test to see if they'd make with a spring planting down here. I forgot about them and when putting row cover over the bed I put two bricks on the cloth on that end to hold the cloth down... right on top of the garlic planting!

After an "OMG!" and removal of the bricks, there they were, pale and about 2" long, bent over. They've since recovered, no worse for the wear, I guess.

When starting with garlic, buy the best Filaree Garlic Farm varieties...

Music, Bogatyr, Benld etc, that I've grown for years, did well
but nothing like the garlic from Filaree!

I checked my pics from last year, and it was the end of April before garlic shoots were coming up. So I will have to be a little patient....

My climate here is way different than yours.
Starting now, our night lows are in 50s F
I am debating to mulch to keep the soil cooler and moist longer.
Come June, my garlic might be done.

I pulled the heavy layer of leaf mulch off my garlic and shallots today, gave it its annual top dressing of blood meal, then put about half the leaf mulch back on. Out of 102 garlic cloves planted, 101 are up. So far so good, but it's still early....

I could only find shoots from 1/2 the shallots, but it's often slower to sprout than the garlic.

Hoping it's a good garlic year for all!

Finally we drove out to the countryside to do some early spring chores. The ground is still frozen deeper and there is snow in the shady spots, but the area where I planted all garlic was free of snow and ice. I raked the leaves to the side, so that the sun can warm up the rows covered with black plastic. It was great sight to see most of the varieties already sprouting.

Yay Sari!! What a beautiful sight.
We are in exactly the same conditions here, snow lingering in the shade, and some deeper freezing still. The big porcelains are coming up in the front bed, although not quite as tall as your sprouts they survived without mulch and are tolerating our freezing nights still, so I'm very happy about that. I'm still waiting for anything in the other bed, which took longer to lose all the snow cover, must be a bit more shaded.
