Carmello - if the person who sent these see's this post, can you please let me know if these are saved seeds from the de-hybridized Carmello (from Tomatofest), or if they are commercial F1 seeds?

Nighthawk - still looking for something about this one.

"The seeds for this pink heart came to me through a trade here at T'ville and were named by someone who got them from a Romanian family who had grown them for many years. The plant was one of my many stunted transplants which got off to a slow sorry start, then was plagued by severely deformed fruits, but has finally ripened several fruits in the 14-30 oz. range."


This came from the "New in 2013 Tomatoes" thread by Kath. It's Mom's Heart. There are pictures of it in the thread as well, lovely pictures.

Thanks! It's good to know that I can save seeds from it. While there's no room left in the 2014 garden, it's on the (tentative) list for 2015.

Here are the photos of what I got when I grew out one plant of Mom's Heart last year. Since I'm not the one who donated these seeds, perhaps someone else will be able to give more info about this one.

I think I am probably the one that sent them or at least one of those who did. It was actually my favorite of the hearts I grew in 2013.

The seeds came from Valerian Dinkca (spelling?) in Romania; it came from his mom's garden who grew it for decades. He did know the name of the original variety so called it Mom's Heart.

Excellent taste and productive. Did not have the wispy foliage of some hearts.

His last name is Dinka and Valerian just sent me four new heirlooms from Romania, including Mom's Heart.

And that when he signed up for my 2914 seed offer where we just got talking tomatoes.

It happens.

This is the description I received when I asked about it last year:
The "nighthawk" seeds are late, indet, black, plum, paste tomatoes.

I found them to be fairly productive, and used them in salads and sauce. I can't find my picture though.

Glad you did that last post; I was just about to send you some Mom's Heart. I was going to send you some in the request letter for your 2014 seed give away, but decided I wanted to get the request in the mail.

In addition to Mom's Heart, I also grew Pink Delice and Garden Red Pride varieties from Valerian. I just received some more varieties from him, some from a German seed bank and one from a Cechian seed bank. If you are interested in any of these, pm me and I will send seeds.

Thanks for the info. If you do manage to find the picture, I'd love to see it. Another quick search just came up with a lot of info on a variety called Purple Russian. Does it sound similar to Nighthawk?

That does look ver similar - my plants got taller than 5' but the pictures and general description matches fairly well.

I received Early Wonder (I believe contributed by Gary/Tormato). Just learned there is a pink one out there as well as the red (correct) one. Wondering which color the ones sent are. Thanks!
