I tried to eat them but the seeds were old and rancid.
I decided to bring them home and feed them to the birds and dumped them on the ground.
The seeds sprouted and I had a sunflower patch in my yard.
Who would have thought old rancid salted sunflower seeds would sprout.

How cool is that!! I didn't know you can grow those salted sunflower seeds too. How awesome.

My next sunflowers will be ones that are disease resistant if I can find any. I don't know what it is with sunflowers but they bring a smile to my face. I only wished they lived longer so I can enjoy them more.

The short lived part is what makes 'em so special. I hear you on the disease resistant part.

I grew the Martha S. Mammoth they sell at HD. Really tall, lots of pollen, pretty easy.

Tiger's Eye from rareseeds, fedco and seedsofchange produced some really interesting ones too. High recommend.

Next one on my grow list is Tarahumara White Shelle.

Oh, Bluee, all your sunflowers are amazing!!
I tried to grow them here but they just blow down, it's way too windy.
My friend grew some against a wall last year though... wow.

Best part of all, the seeds are delicious.... food from a giant beautiful flower.

I googled the Tarahumara White Shelle. It sounds interesting. Only thing is from blurbs I read from several sites, you only get one big head and that would mean planting a whole lot of them.

Bluee.... Don't feel bad when you have set backs or problems trying to grow other plants. We all have successes and failures. Sometimes it may take 4 or 5 or more tries before a person learns to get it right. Just stay positive and keep trying. You'll get it eventually.

Oh, I don't know how close your blooms are to having ripe seed, but keep an eye on them. You can just about bet when they are almost fully ripe or ripe that you'll have every kibd of bird and critter trying to eat your seed.

I don't know if when they in the final stages you can bag them or not to keep the critters out.

I was reading an article titled: "Wisconsin Man Plants 4-Mile Stretch of Sunflowers in Tribute to Wife Who Died of Cancer"

She passed away from cancer at 66 last November, her husband Don Jaquish planted nearly 400 acres of sunflowers for her. I was moved when reading this article for the love he had for her.

That made me tear up too...
