I am so sorry to hear your beloved pet is so ill; they are so much a part our families, so dependent and loving, yet limited in their ability to understand what is going on; it makes it as least as hard as when a human family member is hurting. Praying that we will be hearing good news soon.

Thank you all for your prayers and wishes for a positive outcome. I just got home from visiting him at the hospital. He is still in their intensive care unit and his condition remains guarded.
He is suffering from sepsis; a severe, system wide bacterial infection that they believe originated in his bladder. Because of his mature age, it spread rapidly within a very short time span. They have him on an aggressive antibiotic treatment via IV, along with pain medication and he has a catheter. His heart rate is slow, likely from from the infection. He is refusing food and water, which means I can't bring him home until that changes. When he saw me, he started to whimper softly. He was too weak to raise his head but he sure tried. He's been with me every day for over 17 years and since I have no children of my own, he's been the closest thing to one for me.

Sounds like he's in good hands and that it was a good thing you got him attention as soon as you did. Sepsis in humans is very serious, so would imagine that is no different with animals. In most cases it starts with a previous primary infection that triggers another infection/sepsis.
When he gets home he's going to probably have a long slow recovery period, if he's anything like my old chocolate lab, B.S. She developed sepsis after a surgery to remove a cancerous tumour. It is no wonder he was whimpering when he saw you if you'd been together daily for over 17 years. I'm sure he feels more connected to you than anyone or anything else...and the more time you can spend with him while he's recovering the better. My thoughts and prayers continue for all of you. |

Just makes me bawl...I will continue to hope for the best. He is in one of the best facilities and getting the very best of care. You would think after 35 years as a vet my heart would get a little harder but no such luck. Hang in there Craig...

Oh that's good news! Will they let you take some of his favorite treats and see if you can coax him into eating?
