I will probably be eating Golden Gems by Saturday. Nothing else close.

Chello was my first today. I've lived here in Cypress for 10 years and this is the latest that I've had a ripe tomato. Ususally its Kimberly, SunGold or Juliet. But this year Chello was the winner. since all but 8 of my plants are in containers I am busy with the wind causing the containers to get watered 3 times a day but the crop looks really good. Plenty of Tigerellas and Lemon Boys. The Green Doctors are doing well as is Anna's Russian. Need to go buy some Wrights Bacon. Mmm...mm

Mike,

Talk about wind, man has it been bad here lately. I usually wrap cages, but it seem like last year they were shading each other too much, so went without this year. I just make sure they don't dry out. Morovsky Div appears to have set some fruit.

I really need to give Sungold another try. No way it could be the spitter that it was for me. Seed source in 06 or 07 was Burpee. What source do you use Worth? and everyone else?

Here is a brief history of sungold for me.
First plant was from Home depot (Must have been a one time deal as I never saw them there again) a long time ago about the time I met you Duane on garden Web.
The second time was seeds from a feller here at TomatoVille, again last year from tomato growers supply. this year the plant came from Suze and I have no idea where the seeds came from.
The results from all the plants were the same.
I have said this and I will say it again, to get the true flavor of Sungold they have to be very orange. Grabber Orange like the Old MOPAR muscle cars.

My seed source for Sungold is normally TGS. Renee's Garden is also a good / true source and is sometimes found on seed racks at better nurseries in the area.

Golden Gem (also an F1 hybrid) is another nice one. Many similarities to Sungold in flavor profile and plant habit (and DTM), but a bit sweeter and mellower.

Oh, and - It looks like my first ripe tomato is either going to be Sungold or Bloody Butcher.

I was wrong: the squirrels found a set of near-ripe Bloody Butchers. Oddly, the ripest one was the one they left undamaged. It was 100% ripe on the vine.

And it was goooooood....

I picked a Cherokee Purple on Saturday that was starting to blush. I noticed that it had some scratches on the surface and there is no way I'm going to see birds get my first CP of the season. It's currently ripening on the counter.

This particular CP seems to be a freak accident. Not only was it the first fruit to blush, but for a long time, it was the only fruit anywhere in the garden. This plant had fruit growing before most other plants even bloomed.

Now the plant looks stunted. I probably should have cut it off.

I hear ya on the bird deal. I have my second CP blushing right now but have it protected and will harvest it tomorrow afternoon.
Green Giant is putting out some monster tomatoes. I hope I can harvest a couple before we get rain as I would hate to lose them to splitting. We need the rain I just hope it holds off for a few days

Yeah, just in the last few hours I found fresh teethmarks on one of the BB's. I'd put up a trap but my cat would probably end up inside first.

Right now it's that hot south wind that has me uptight. It is drying me up faster than a blow dryer. I watered this morning and I am probably going to water again tomorrow afternoon with the soaker hoses. I'm probably going to need to add another big layer of mulch as well, which is going to be a Right Royal Pain because my plants are so close together this year.

I started to harvest sungold about 10 days ago. The plant was bought so I don't know the seed source. Also Sweet 100 and Matt's wild cherry yesterday. No big tomato are showing color yet. Some plants are 7 feet tall. It looks like a good tomato season so far. Have about 100 plants. What am I gonna do with it? Sell it on the Farmer's Market?
