This year my first was bloody butcher, but it was small and misshapen. Yesterday I got a german red strawberry and today there is a lovely cherokee purple. Can't wait for them to ripen up on the counter. I am soooo ready!

Here's some Brandywines I brought in for counter ripening because of the same ants. Time to break out the cinnamon. |

Timmah, how have your brandywines tasted for you this year? And have you had any of your CP yet? Love torturing myself hearing about how the tomatos have been turning out for everyone. Couple more days or so for my first of the season, my stomach just literaly growled at me.

The first Brandywines a couple weeks ago tasted somewhat pedestrian, the ones that were eaten this week taste much better with more depth of flavor. Teh CP I've eaten lately has a nice rich taste to it, I expect the flavor to deepen on subsequent fruit also. In my haste to enjoy garden fresh tomaotes, I ate some of them before they had time to ripen as much as they could have, which surely affected the flavor; so I'm being patient with these and waiting until I'm sure they're ready.

Tried Druzba a couple days ago, it had a nice solid tomatoey flavor to it.
Brandywine is starting to show hints of more flavor, detected slight sweet & rich flavors in some bites. Aunt Ginnie's Purple has tasted by far better, even for the first fruit to ripen, it had a sweet, rich taste with a unique finish that was different from the initial sweet & rich flavors. JD's, KBX, Eva Purple Ball, & Mortgage lifter will be on the chopping block within the week. |

Thanks Timmah, love reading about fellow tomato lovers thoughts on the taste of the tomato. Look forward to reading and comparing on the Mortgage lifter when i get a ripe one also. Although words fail me sometimes when trying to express what my taste buds are telling me sometimes. LOL

My pleasure. =) It's fun to experience the unique nuances of flavors as they intermingle; also why I like roasting different coffees from around the world: one can have a different experience with the same bean just by changing the roasting profile. The only other context in which I experienced flavors that were indescribable was when I used to partake of the good herb. Organically grown, of course.
Which reminds me of a wonderful book I read by Michael Pollan: "The Botany of Desire" He definitely sheds a different light, affording a different perspective on our coevolution with plants. How it may be just as true we were domesticated by plants rather than the widely-believed converse. The introduction alone is quite insightful & entertaining in itself. http://books.google.com/books?id=Woy...page&q&f=false |

Eva Purple Ball: Tasted sweet, somewhat tart (probably because I didn't let it ripen long enough ) and was nice & juicy. A really attractive fruit with pleasing locule presentation.
