Yes, they can be, and there's a whole sequence of pictures in my book having to do with fermentation, but I, without a camera, without a cell phone, can't take pictures, so I have to try to paint words as I would pictures.

Can't use a cell phone whereI am b'c I'm blocked, don't want a camera and it's useless anyway b'c now that I have to use a walker my orthopedic surgeon won't let me go out to the garden.

You can do it, honest you can, and for every person who growns OP tomatoes it's seen as a rite of initiation.

Thanks for all the information. I was going to wait until next year to try seed saving, but now I'm thinking maybe I'll give it a try with some variety - I want to bag blossoms though, since I have just limited space I'd be quite disappointed if I ended up with a wierd variety.

Carolyn - can't go to the garden?! What a bummer. Boo on the surgeon. You couldn't use one of those motorized scooters or anything? My friend's husband had one, it looked kinda fun actually (although of course, it's not fun to need one).

When selecting tomatoes to save seed from, does it matter which fruit you select or which plant you select it from? for size, shape, days to maturity.

If I have six San Marzano plants and I choose to save seed from the first fruit every year, I can reduce the days to maturity over time. But could I select any tomato from the plant that was the first to produce and get the same results?

Or would saving seed from the largest tomato off a single plant ever lead to larger tomatoes off the entire plant?

I believe that in most cases - barring mutations and the such - the genetics lie with the plant and NOT the particular fruit.
