I'm not sure if this would make any difference on tomato plants since the stems root so easily anyway. But I've seen some air-layering articles that talk about removing some bark from a branch of a tree before you apply the plastic bottle with soil for rooting. I've tried it with Mulberry trees with good results.

Perhaps if you scratched the tomato stem a little before applying the bottle with soil it would root more quickly? Don't know if it would work, just throwing it out there...

Edit: I just watched VAGardener's video and he has great roots in 2 weeks. Not sure how much better you can do. Great vid, by the way!
