That's too bad. Riverhead is a long drive from NYC. At least there aren't tolls that way.

The issue is getting a certification as to what's in it. I still think the company Black Cat posted is a good deal even with a delivery charge. Paying a little extra for a guaranteed composition is worth it!

Sorry I do admit that the thread got side tracked a little.
I see you are a new member here and would like to give you my warmest welcome.

As for compost many of the members here have been burned on it.
We have had folks lose untold hundreds of plants from compost that was supposed to be all natural.
We are very particular as to where it came from and what is in it.
We are also a cheap bunch and will do almost anything to save a buck.

Only a suggestion but if you need compost and can afford it I would buy and keep all 3 yards for myself.
You would be surprised as to how much you could, can and will use.
It wont go bad and I keep about 5 yards of compost/soil on hand all of the time.
Right now the pile is growing onions.
One suggestion on the container/ containers you made.
With no bottoms you can spread some of the compost around the sides on the ground.
The roots of the tomatoes will grow down and then out and the will find and use it.
Also if you wish water the soil around the containers.

I do container gardening in a small urban space. The amount that I would need probably wouldn't justify me joining a group purchase. Plus, I don't have a car. I might have to settle for buying small locally made bags of compost from the Greenmarket (NYC's system of farmer's markets).

If I had a bona fide yard, I might consider it.

James, where do you buy your compost? I guess you've looked at LI compost's stuff /aka Great Gardens at HD and you don't think its good?

Like Discoprincess, I don't need as much as a cu yd. By my calculations I need 50 gallons which is approx 1/4 of a cu yard. Too bad compostwerks doesn't sell their stuff in bags/bales.

I am growing exclusively in Earthtainers and using soiilless mix - Promix-BX. So I don't really need much.

LI compost - What's in it?
I have used some of the Great Gardens stuff on the yard but I would not grow food in it.
The last batch of compost I got from guys I trust out East of Riverhead.

Li Compost -
http://www.citizenscampaign.org/news/story.asp?id=418

From their own powerpoint - (they lost me at biosolids)

LI Compost will apply prior experience to a new organic material – food waste
First project will be located at LI Compost’s 62 acre site in Yaphank, NY utilizing anaerobic digestion technology proven for decades in Europe and elsewhere
Sources of waste to include Long Island based restaurants, institutions, and grocery chains
Expect to begin construction in early 2014 and place the project in service end of 2014 or first quarter 2015.
160,000 tons of material annually to be treated using anaerobic digestion
120,000 tons of food waste
30,000 tons of FOG (fats, oils and greases)
10,000 tons of grass clipping
Resulting biogas will be used to produce both electricity and CNG
Biosolids will be integrated into LI Compost’s existing wholesale and retail bag products.

Holy Crap....that is definitely scary reading. And pardon the expression...but food for further thought.

Thanks for that article, Worth1 - very interesting. I guess in general how do you know who to trust? For example, I'm sourcing compost now to try and make my own potting mix (as I have many containers planned for the up coming season.) I had planned on just going to the big box store to pick some up and now I'm super paranoid... That said, last year, I just went and bought Sta-green at Lowes or Miracle-gro. How do I know what compost was used in those commerical mixes?
