I was finding that when I placed the lids on the tainers they didn't snap into place. I've noticed the tainers bow out slightly on the sides.......some more than others. Now, when I placed the cage on that obviously secured the lid in place. Is this slight bowing normal or did my filling technique put too much outward pressure? I had some pretty wet mix (to ensure good wicking) to start with and then as I added the mix to the tainers layer by layer I watered the heck out of it even more. I probably went a little overboard making sure the mix was thoroughly wet. I bet the extra weight from the water amplified the outward pressure on the sides of the tainers. Also, I'm sure once you cut the center portion of the lid it loses a lot of rigidity and stability. I did order the Earthbox AWS. Now I am going to be doing supplemental feeding with liquid fert. I have some Texas Tomato Food, FoxFarm, and Dr Earth - not sure which one(s) I am going to use. I have thought of doing a trial but I guess to really be legit I would need to have multiple plants of each variety, at least one variety for each fert brand but probably 2-3 variety per brand to really get a good ideal. Anyway, to my question I had - when using the AWS how often will I know to fertilize? With the TTF, it says you can fert every 2-3 waterings. Should I just something like every 10 days or so? If needed, I can post this in the Earthtainer thread so all who come looking for tainer info can see. Thanks

Justin,
Yes, the wet mix caused the bowing - Getting the lids and cages on soon is key. Post your liquid fert question on the EarthTainer thread. Dewayne uses Texas Tomato Food in his 'Tainers and can give you feeding recommendadions. Raybo |

You are an inspiration to all, Justin. Really great work! And the guys (dogs) look terrific. They are so funny when they know they did something wrong. At times I didn't have the heart to discipline them for bad deeds because their guilty looks melted my resolve. Yeah, all dogs around me can read the invisible "sucker" sign hung around my neck!

Ray, thanks. And oh how I have a short memory I forgot I already asked the fert question in a TTF thread and guess who answered my question........Dewayne
Dan, Thanks for the good words. Yes, I too am a sucker for the four legged little buddies. I can get so made at them sometimes but not 5 minutes later I am scratching their ears and asking them if they want at treat!

I am looking forward to see how you make out with the different mixes and I have to applaud you for your labeling system! I am currently using a mix of promix, bark fines and perlite in my earthtainers. So far so good.
I also love the pics of your adorable garden helpers (hinderers?) lol
