OK. I think I've got a pretty good understanding of this:

NO MATTER HOW MANY PLANTS YOU PLANT , YOU WILL NEVER HAVE ENOUGH.

The other answer that I found very helpful is :

PLANT AS MANY AS YOU CAN FIT IN YOUR GARDEN >>THEN ADD 10 MORE.

So whats the number of people in the family and friends got to do with it ? hahaha

They only come into play if they have additional space you can use for more plants.

You grow as many as your obsession drives you. You expand you recipients to accommodate your obsession. In my case I started selling at markets and now I am justified in growing over 300 plants. The down side is that I have little time to do much tomato processing except for my obsession for salsa, and plain tomato eating...and that ain't so bad.

20-30 for slicing, 62.5 for sauces and 10-15 cherry.

It's not how many tomato plants does a woman/man need, it's how many you WANT. And we know the answer to that...

That is the minimum.

This thread is a crack up and a personal affirmation. I grow 23 for our family of 4. Why? Because I can't figure out anywhere else to grow a 24th. The most productive part of the season the tomatoes start to overwhelm us and that's when friends and neighbors start getting real friendly and I'm happy to share. So, if you have limited space, dedicate all you can to as many tomatoes as you can fit. If you have all the space you could ever want, then I would say 1 cherry tomato type per every 2 people, 4 plants of slicers of your favorite varieties per person. Canning/saucing is a whole different animal and I'm still figuring that one out. Whatever you do, you can't go wrong. Try it. Tweak it next year. That's a part of the fun of it!

Let's see: 100 for Stone Ridge Farms, 100 for Dunn's Greenery, 12 for my friend Herb, 8 for my sister-in-law Lou, 12 for my brother Joel, 6 for my brother Bill, 10 for my friend Joanie 12 for my friend Anita and 10 for her employee Dawn, 20 for my brother-in-law Marty, 12 for the Community Garden (up to 302). Then I NEED my 35. That's 338, then add 10% just because and that will add 34. So that is 372 and since I like even numbers let's make it 400.

You can never be too thin. Have too much money or too many tomatoes.
My little Papillon would also say you can never have too many chips.

I grow a garden of 25 plants for a family of 2 (plus a dog), a BMW mechanic who LOVES tomatoes, many clients and friends who go "what's that?" then you hand them a PBTD and then want more. This year I'm going to add 11 dwarf varieties on the deck to make sure a family of two (plus a dog) can get by. It's a feast or famine thing, so enjoy the summer tomato feast, make hay while the sun shines, happy Spring to all y'all.

Haha great thread. For 2 persons + one tomato jelly loving cat + sometimes friends and family to share I have started 40 types. Half of it are big tomatoes [saladette size and up are big for me] and other half cherries 'cause we really LIKE them. 2 seeds of each stable variety and more seeds on unstable lines/crosses.. So each "backup" copy of stable ones goes to my family juz for case, and they have totally different soil and way of gardening than me.. so it's a nice test. Each plant of unstable ones stays. And now started 10 dwarfs.. And I think of starting maybe another 2-3 juz to have some fun with crosses.. sooo... Its something like 50-60 plants total.. so 30 for 1 person.. ekhm.. BUT if I would know how most of them taste and perform it would me less than that.. At leaast I have such a fantasy
Anyway, in a case of some kind of disaster, SOMETHING should give me fruits anyway, because there are so many of them.. And at the end of the season I will know which ones are gardener-proof
