I have three Surprises/Mysteries:
1. Jaune Flammé, bought as a plant is producing 1-2 oz. oblong fruit instead of the larger round ones I'm familiar with
2. Cherokee Purple, bought as a plant turned outside to be Lemon Boy
3. Another tomato plant which I thought was Rutgers is still waiting to be ID'd. The farmer I bought #2 and #3 from was also selling Cherokee Purple, Rutgers, lemon boy, Brandy Wine, Beef steak and Parks whopper, all in UNLABELLED POTS! I know it's not CP or Lemon Boy. That leaves Rutgers, Brandywine, Beefsteak and Parks Whopper. The first fruit is just starting to blush and appears to be about 8-10 oz with distinctive green shoulders. Fruits are nicely rounded and very uniform in size. Any guesses?

Today I had a blusher on this plant and early signs point to red. Also, I gave it my "tap test" to see if I could predict if it's a paste or a slicer.

No scientific proof, but what I've noticed is that if you tap on pastes with your finger, you get a hollow sound; if you tap on slicers, you get more of a thunk like when you tap on a melon.

This mystery tomato is so far giving me a hollow sound. I'll have to see if that changes as it ripens more. Since I gave it a spot reserved for a paste, I'll be very happy if that's what it turns out to be!

As I stated in another post, I planted 5 Omar's Lebanese from the same seed pack (totally tomatoes). Four are identical, with large oblate pink fruit. The fifth one is much more vigorous, has all HEART shaped fruit, and does not seem to be as sensitive to wilts and yellowing like the other 4. I am collecting seeds right now to grow out next year, and will also give a taste report.

Another surprise today!

When I planted out my peppers, the last ones to go in we're the hot/super hots I grow in plastic grow bags. When I was done, I was missing my Lemon Drop/Aji Limon seedling. I shrugged and decided I must have missed it when I brought everything out to harden off, so I planted an extra Italian Cayenne in it's place.

Today I was browsing through my pepper patch in the raised bed where I thought I had eight Da Appendere plants. Discovered one that is just now setting (weeks behind the others), and it's growing small, wrinkled, pointy peppers that grow pointing up.

I found my missing plant!

Two surprises here, both came from seeds from the MMM.

1. One of the Mary Huddleston plants had large cherry sized bi-color fruits.
2. One of the Ferris Wheel plants had medium sized beefsteak orange fruits.

My German Red Strawberry looks more like a pear than a strawberry. I prefer strawberry.

Vladimir, what you show looks like a piriform (pear shaped) one, who knows which one, Albenga, Liguria, who knows.

But the good news is that I have some fresh 2014 GRS seed sent to me as an extra from one of my seed producers and it will be listed in my upcoming 2015 seed offer.

But since you sent me some wonderful Czech chocolate, and since I was the one who introduced this variety:

Just PM me and give me your address since I threw away the mailer that held the chocolate that had your address on it.

Well... only one of the seeds of Mr. Bruno from the MMM germinated, and it doesn't look like the pictures I've found. This is quite a small, nearly oblong fruit maybe half the size of a Moravsky Div here. It is semi-determinate afaict, so if it's crossed, it's with another sp/sp plant I guess.

Carolyn,
I'm glad, that the chocolate tasted you. I've never eaten it. I have to taste it.
Looking forward to your offer of seeds, certainly I will write to you.

I have my guy grow tomatoes for me. Almost all of them are volunteers. One deliberate planting is being grown from seeds I picked up at a local plant swap. It was only labeled "yellow tomato seeds". There was no indication as to the size, shape, or DTM of the tomato. So, I just labeled it "mystery yellow".

Mystery yellow turned out to be very productive. The tomatoes are golden-yellow beefsteak-sized.

Ordered Sungold seeds, received a package of seeds labelled Sungold, grew medium red beefsteak tomatoes, which are thankfully delicious, but neither cherry nor Sungold, to the dismay of my kids and the friends to whom I gifted alleged Sungold seedlings.

My main problem is going to be if I really like the taste of these cherries, I have no idea how to duplicate them for next year.
Well, I don't have to worry about having to duplicate this variety for next year because it is about the worst tasting cherry tomato I ever had, and I can't imagine anyone growing this variety (what ever it is) more than once. I was hoping maybe it would turn out to be a Sungold or some other good tasting variety, but no such luck. At least my two Riesentraube plants are producing good tasting cherries.

Another surprise!

In the MMMM swap I received a packet of pepper seeds labeled simply,"Habanero." I grew one plant expecting your typical golden/orange Habanero pepper. The compact plant loaded up with peppers and the first few just starting turning color this past week. Seems I received seeds for Peach Habanero!
