We grew one variety that was a spitter but that was due to record rainfall - so I don't count that one.
There is one that is a spitter. It is some sort of hybrid grape tomato on the CiCi's Pizza Salad Buffet. It has absolutely no flavor whatsoever and has thick skin. I won't eat them, and a garden salad without tomatoes is just naked. |

Of course I know that there are a lot of varieties to be taken into consideration, but I didn't have room to put all that in the title. As far as this thread having any high purpose, it's probably a lot like a candy bar. It's doesn't have to be good for it to still be fun. I just think these are fun, light-hearted threads to read and reply to as we wait for spring planting.
I've thought and thought and I can't remember any spitter I've had, although I'm sure there has been, somewhere in the past. We've done these threads in the past, and I think maybe the first one was called "Keepers and Spitters" or maybe "Winners and Spitters," or something similar. Honestly, these threads have a lot of unique humor. I laugh aloud when I read some of the disparaging descriptions people post about their "spitter" or the year. Some of this is pretty rich. Worth's "red coke bottle caps" is a good example. And Robbie's "mouthful of sand." And Tormato's "Insipids." I wish I could remember some of the good comments from the past, and there have been some hilarious ones. DS

Heresy
My spitter is the fabulous Brandywine. I grew it twice and hated the taste. It tasted spoiled. Now can someone tell me which heirlooms have a taste similar to Bradnywine so I can avoid them. Otherwise I'm afraid to try heirloloms.

It wasn't this year but the worst I've ever tasted was Sungold. It had a weird, wild, funky, noxious something going on. The first Yellow Pears I ever had were wonderful-like a good beefsteak (not the sweet ones). The second time, a few years later, Yellow Pear was GROSS. Mealy, bland, and chewy. There was no discernible flavor at all.
