In terms of when it sets and ripens fruit, it is nearly the same as Azoychka for me. |

4 from the Dwarf project that might be good for cool Zone development are ..
Dwarf Arctic rose , Bundaberg Rumball , Dwarf Pink Passion , Sarandipity (short days for development rating ...under 70) Yukon Quest did well for me also .

Zolotoe Serdtse was about a week later than Pervaya L the year I grew them both. Very heavy crop of firm orange fruit. ZS ripens really slowly and a little tricky to tell when the fruit is peak for fresh eating. They are excellent to freeze IMO for various uses - sweet. |

I have trialed 3 Japanese Mini dwarfs again
Rejina Red , Rejina Yellow (Regular leaf) and Chibikko (rugose) Rejina Red and Yellow are listed as early season and Chibikko is listed as Mid season .. The funny thing is Chibikko plants are flowering and setting fruit well ahead of the other 2 "early" types (they are worth the wait as they are delicious !) It is sure funny how a coastal cool growing environment will change the development outcomes of various varieties .....and some mid season become very efficient ...more so than some "early season " varieties .

Bower, I am glad to see you tried the cross. Some plants in the f4's are a much bigger fruit, and are only less than a week behind the F1, I have the f5's going now, and chose 6-7 different plants to carry on the line. Some of the f4's were only 102 days from seed sprout and some of the fruit was a pound, the best part is they taste awesome, and produce like crazy. I have some pics of them in my plant management thread in the container section.
I also did several back crosses with other crosses and are also stabilizing those too, we are seeing some good results there too. I also have the entire Saraev collection outside in my garden for trials, some are looking very promising, even in AK where we have chilly nights most of the time. Good thread, I have written down a few varieties I have not tried. Keep-em coming. Mark |

Hello! In my place Malakhitovaya Shkatulka sets up to 7 trusses of fruits. For me it's not an early type, more of a mid variety. This year I planted outside on May 15, just started to bloom. Some years I planted out on Apr 1, and got first fruits in the beginning of August.

For a large fruited variety I have had excellent results with mid-season Caspian Pink whereas I have never had a Delicious even set fruit!
In my experience, if the variety has a Russian name it does well for me. Most of the blacks have been very tasty. This season, of my early tomatoes, Glasnost, won the contest for flavor and texture. Stupcike Skelenikove has been productive but not outstanding flavor. Also consider Beaverlodge Slicer, though it has a tendency to have more fruit than plant! Pick off early blossoms or plant closely? |

This year, I got first response (small green fruits) on Rosovyi Moyd (Pink Honey), COEUR DE BOEUF ROSE DU JAPON (new to me), and P20BK (new to me). They were planted out on Apr 1 and Apr 15. Also got some fruits on Sakura F1 (cherry) from Walmart. Non of them are ripe, yet. Half of the varieties in my garden are not even blooming.

We're having a really late cold cloudy spring this year, so although I started late the effect on the plants is as if I had started earlier. Also having some issues with the new container soil and doing my best to make amends before it's too late. Some of the plants are dropping their early sets, and some have tiny sets that aren't growing in the present cold drizzle and fog. So in the circumstances, the ones that push out the fruit and grow them regardless are once again the early stars of the show. Most are the same lines that were outstanding in last year's bleak summer - Skipper, Kitten Paws, and Hope's Early top the list - Hope's from the Kimberley X Zolotye Kupola line has the biggest and earliest fruit on the way.
In the OP's on trial this year, only V Desyatku is holding its own against the cold. It has dropped a few sets but still has multiple fruit growing and about grape size at 75 days from seed. Orange Minsk was looking good but sadly dropped its early sets. None of the other OP's have grown any sets as yet. Mark, your cross was started late with Oaxaca Jewel PL (a personal favourite) and both of them have tiny sets not grown yet, but these two only germinated April 15 so they are still but 62 days from seed. The plant is lovely, I put it in the 'cheerful PL' category ie no corkscrewing the leaves to complain about one thing or another. We're stuck in RDF for a couple more days, but the forecast is for summer weather to kick in starting Sunday. Whether it lasts a week or more, well we'll see. |
