I understand, me too. The key is figuring out your flow rate. The Hozon works at 3 gpm and up. Below that flow rate, it does not work at all.
My Hozon got handed to me in a cardboard box of grandpa's old drip irrigation supplies. It's been sitting around for 20+ years, and still works fine. There's not much on it to break. |

With my setup the Hozon works at any flow rate extremely well

I see you replaced the Hozon's small black hose with a larger clear one. Did you have to do anything special to fit it to the Hozon?

I took the Hozon with me to lowes and just fit it to the size I needed. 3/8 I think

If you think it will work, I will make one of those buckets and try it. I need to be able to inject when I am watering just my high tunnel plants. But the flow rate is only .75 gpm. I can hang the bucket from a hook almost 8' in the air, if that is what it takes.

About one foot higher than the Hozon connection will be plenty. The bucket would drain even without the Hozon. At a slow flow rate the siphon effect will be minimal but the gravity flow from the bucket will make up for it.This is the 3rd year I have used mine and saves a lot of work. End of season just soak Hozon in vinegar to remove leftover fertilizer buildup inside the unit. Hope this helps ron |

Well, darn the luck, it did not work for me at all. I hung a cat litter bucket with a hose fitted to the bottom from a hook about 7' high. I had great pressure going to the hozon when I took it off to check. I first tried it at 150 row feet, which is .75 gpm. Then I kept increasing to 500' of row, which is 2.5 gpm, and it still didn't work. My last valve turned on everything else, and the hozon immediately started making a sucking sound and drawing in the fertilizer water.
My hozon was my grandparent's. It could be 20-30 years old. I don't know if that could be the difference. I guess the next step is to buy a new one. They are not expensive. I can try the same trick with a new one, and then when that doesn't work, maybe I can experiment with drilling out the hole to a larger size. |

If you drill out the hole to a larger size where the water runs through you will decrease the velocity therefore making it worse.

I did drill out the hole to almost double the original size. If I fill my bucket with fertilizer water and connect to Hozon, the water will flow out of bucket into Hozon and into water hose BEFORE I EVEN TURN ON WATER PRESSURE. as I said it will work under any flowrate or even no flowrate and bucket will empty. Look at picture in my previous post. works flawlessly ron |

ok, just to clarify, that is the hole where the fertilizer water enters the Hozon, right? If all I need is a hole in the line somewhere, I can make my own fitting, instead of drilling the Hozon. |

Yes, you are correct. The original hole will work slowly with clear water but after drilling to double size it works much better. Hook it up with out turning on water and bucket will slowly drain. remove plastic hose from Hozon connection to verify that it is working. I do not use the coil spring inside the fertilizer bucket connection at all. I think Worth was thinking of drilling the water flow through the Hozon and I agree that this will not work

So are you, in effect, charging up the system with a fertilizer mixture, and then turning on the water? Or are you mixing the bucket's contents into the line as the water is on? |

I think Ron has bypassed spring and ball check in the connection going to the fertilizer bucket.
I have never seen one in person but I have seen pictures. There also could be a difference in your pressure and his. My opinion of them is they have too many bells and whistles like back flow preventers and so on. Now that I have a lathe and reamers I might be able to make one. I know I have a big chunk of brass rod around here somewhere. Every time I have tried to do this the flow rate killed me. My idea on a water displacement tank will work under any flow and pressure and not mix the water with the fertilizer. Worth Last edited by Worth1; May 29, 2016 at 10:23 PM. |

There's certainly a market to be filled. The Hozon is $5 of brass for $30, and it's cheap as far as injectors go. It's the simplest injector to use, but the irony of the minimum 3 gpm flow rate is that only very big gardens can use it. If you could make a Hozon that worked for a small backyard garden, it would be a popular product.
