J.D.'s Special C-Tex, Bear Creek, Gary'O Sena, Black From Tula PL, and Paul Robeson would be among the better for flavor.
I have not grown BSM, but I totally agree with this list, I have had good results from them too.

Paul Rs are usually the biggest plants in my garden, no less than 6 foot and have had plenty of 1 pound+ fruits, usually about 3/4#, but some get very large. Every year I add at least one more plant of this variety ... very tasty! 8" basket of Paul Rs below.

He could not handle a large indeterminate so I was trying to find a black that is at least tennis ball size. Both of these plants are compact, which is what I need, but the few reviews I could find do not sing it's praises.

Can anyone comment on either one of these. Or.... if you know of any other black that might qualify in size for him.
While cruising Tataiana's tomatobase I stumbled on this nice looking Sinyi tomato. I've never grown it but I thought it may suit you and your neighbor. It's supposed to be determinate or semideterminate, so the plant should be compact. The fruits can reach 16 oz. and the flavor is described as typical of purple/black tomatoes.
The only doubt is that coming from Estonia, it may perform better in cooler climates, but I could be totally wrong on that.

Thanks Fritz77. I checked it out. Heritage is carrying it now. Don't know about it taking to Las Vegas, but they claim it is early for a large fruit so that is a plus. Only places I see it was grown is in cold territory. But that does not necessarily mean it can not be grown here.
