Large Fruited OP Container Friendly

EM Champion I know is available at Tatiana's Tomatobase
for sure ....with good info. / history maybe even where else it is available as well .

I still am pinching myself to make sure I am not dreaming over

EM champion ....I don't know how it does it so early in such a small space ..

It was a fluke find ...on my part.



Brandyfred is a 2015 release from the Dwarf Tomato project


It was developed from "Wild Fred" and Brandywine cross

so ...Yum Yum I can hardly wait ....it is a Bit on the Bigger side of the

Dwarf releases ...but if it worth the wait in a 7 gallon and extra fine flavor

Then Great . It sure is a nice fine looking PL plant in the meantime.

Velmozha (only medium size ) for breakfast today

It was fine and early !


EM Champion and Velmozha has many coloured fruit .




In My garden for comparison gold nugget and Chibbiko are also ripe .

I will be definitely be reordering EM Champion refresh ...From Tatiana's

Again as well ...I will save and clean seeds ..but I TRUST Tatiana's

as a source rather than my own ....


It certainly helps to procure seeds early as you never know when

there is a crop fail ..or sold out ....or hard to find ....etc. etc.

1st set earliest and to sixth place in the

6 Large fruited container friendly trial varieties.

I have been sampling Velmozha and EM Champion with breakfast for about

10 days now ......

The initial ones are only medium but very early ....

I think I like the Flavour of Velmozha over EM Champion under these conditions

but EM Champion is "Trending " Larger fruit .

But Results and conditions may vary I guess..

There is Larger fruit coming on ....but Both EM Champion and Velmozha have provided medium fruit ...very early ...

The only other ripe fruit in garden for comparison is , Gold nugget , Chibbiko and Juliet (hybrid)

Velmozha and EM champion have settled down

still had a small ripe Velmozha today for breakfast ..

but I have had to restake 2 times Velmozha and Em champions

as the LARGE fruit is growing and Green as it should be ...and

fruit is so heavy I have to refortify stakes to be careful with containers etc.



others Loxton Ladd and BrandyFred are coming along... Krasnodor Titans as well

but I admit I am a bit disappointed with my Zinulya outcome so far ...

perhaps it is not quite the "Container " adaptable as the others ...

Black Bear, I notice you grow a lot of determinates. What do you do with all the fruit that shows up all at once?

Celebrate ! and 1)eat fresh till supply out goes / overwhelms Consumption ..LOL

and 3) process what one can


4) I have special "dedicated" vegetable deep freezer (mostly Tomatoes ) to hold

and use or process later ......redistribute extra frozen later LOL


I do have dehydrator etc.


....even if "determinants " they are staggered and different times

as well as "Semi-determinants" with the indeterminants ..etc.

Lately I've been considering one year to do just determinates, with the harvests spaced out so I'll have a new load of tomatoes every 10-14 days. (Plus indet cherries for DH.) I've mostly ignored the determinates, so I'd have to do a lot of research to plan that.

If you are able to plant a variety of Toms with different attributes ..

you should be happy from earliest to latest season in your area ...

determinate , Semi , or Indeterminate etc. (some with 2 crops etc. ).


If you have early, early-mid, mid season , mid late , late etc.

even with all being determinate you should be covered.

add a few semi-determinates and Indeterminate and you are good to go.

Mama mia ...they are good this year ! Tomato zing but (I struggle for taste description) a hint of watermelon sweetness as well.

These are the 6 :

EM Champion
Velmozha

both of the above were earliest (early) and provided fruit early but only mediums this year ...but large double hearts are developing ...still green




Krasnodor Titans
Loxton Ladd

Both have set lots of fruit later (Midseason )...

Krsnador Titans had first ripe (medium ) yesterday ..

Loxton Ladd first ripe (medium ) Today

Brandy Fred is a fine looking PL plant with fruit developing
slower and bigger ..

Zinulya....seems to have struggled in the 7 gallon container environment

sparse fruit set and some growing but not near as productive as the other 5

perhaps a Larger container setting would help ?



If I am only getting mostly medium fruits so far in the 7 gallon setting ..

maybe next year I would try to compare dwarf Blazing beauty and/or

Loxton Lass for comparison for the "Orange " Tomato .

I actually had good luck before also with Orange -1 as well.


I think Velmozha has best flavour for me ....
But I was suprised how tangy etc. Loxton Ladd was very good as well !

Krasnodor Titans wow ! magazine perfect fruit picture ...blemish free

solid meaty ...etc. will see how this one continues .

No suprise as was the case this season ..for me

EM Champion and Velmozha ....are the production champs!

started with ripe fruit June 28 th and still producing well with green ones coming on ! In 7 gallons who could ask for anything more ! (see pix).


Loxton Ladd full of orange fruit with a very nice Tomato/ fruit taste
.....bit of a hint of "apricot " flavour ...(sorry if my attempt to describe an extra
tomato flavour ...falls short )



Krasnador Titans had a few very nice fruit now lots of greenies but very few

fruit in hand ....for me . (compared to the others to have been left behind in this year )


BrandyFred is a very nice looking plant..... but a few a fruits are blushing and more greenies coming on ........BUT....no actual fruit in hand at this point .


Zinulya ....seemed to have struggled all along and the vines wanted to

wander far than the normal "container friendly " habit.......

BUT........BUT...it has actually produced the only LARGE fruit this season ...In my trial of 6 varieties in 7 gallon containers.....

2 lbs etc. very few and much later .... (it makes me wonder if a larger "container" (than the 7 gallon trial ) would make this variety more interesting .



To me I will end my trial about august 21 /2017

as anytime after that the Seasonal / weather/ disease ....fortunes can change

drastically on the coast ....

I am more inclined to favour a large consistent crop of medium Tomatoes midseaon (or early ).

over a chance and promise of Yummier/ bigger tomatoes later ... "just wait another week "

to ripen ........(some years that extra week never comes on the coast ).

I'm with you, Black Bear. This year we had too much rain throughout May, June, & July. Besides bringing disease, it delayed ripening on everything. I just can't wait that long for maters! I dislike growing 80 DTM plants, and don't even consider 90 DTM's. Your cutoff is even earlier, I suppose.

Tell me, of the varieties that are acceptable to you in terms of DTM and productivity, which do you find to be best tasting?

You are right about the cutoff ....I used to get nervous ...with a

75 days rating (mostly due to a cool climate .....100 cool days = 75 "standard days "....but of course that is variable and there are ways to mitigate that effect . but nothing is assured if one has the first COLD disease bringing rain

about August 16th. I have moved to drier coastal climate than before ..

so we shall see.


The Siberian developed ones seemed to work most fine in the cool climate ...

but for me when it got extra hot (like this year ) they were set back a bit more

than the regular climate ones ..
