Worth, I'm going to have to try this. A few questions:
- How far into the pot does the tube go? Half way in?
- Would holes drilled in the in-pot end of the tube make any difference in water delivery?
- You simply water by filling the tube, yes?

I found the white PVC tube to be a waste of time and energy.
Just pulled mine out the other day.
I just watered with a dram watering wand.
The sight tube was just shoved in about six inches.
And was only used for water level indicating and draining when need be.
Cut it at an angle for easy insertion.

More this evening when I get home.

Thanks for the clarification. You water from the top and the tube serves as a water level indicator. Super idea!

From reading your thread last year, I came up with this idea. I've only made the one pipe with holes 3" apart. That way, if others have tried this and it doesn't work I can find out before wasting pipes. The idea is to put the pipe in the bucket before adding mix and plant. I also have to put plastic over the top to help keep out RKN and Fusarium Wilt 3.

I'm with you guys on the Matts, you really need to keep up on it. I planted one in one of my Hugelkultur beds and it self seeds every year lol, gotta luv those volunteers.

In pots I have had luck with Sweet 100 and sprite.
I planted a fantastico but wasn't pleased with taste or production.

I like the idea of automaic/self drain.
Say you install a 6 inch pvc on the drain hole. So at the most there will be 6 inch of water at the bottom. 6
I might try this with a round cattle tub that I have.

You didn't mention the lower drilled hole being off-center. I had the pipe set in the vice, pilot hole drilled, I turned on the drill and a dog walked up from behind wagging her tail against my leg = off-center hole. Oh well, I can't see it being off when the mix is in the bucket. But I'll know it's there. I am a person who will pick apart my work. The whole job might look good, but I can see the flaw a mile away.

I did think of one possible bad thing with the pipe setup. The tomato roots could grow into the pipe holes. To remedy this, I could water with just water at times, and other times with a weaker Alaska Fish Emulsion or Tomato MG. That would possibly take care of fertilizing.
